How would religion in Civ4 work?

How would it exactly? Would it improve relations with civs of the same religion, and make them more likely to sign alliance with you against a civ with a different religion? Would this occur more during certain periods of time? Would each religion have a "religious golden age"? There could be a lot of good ideas to come from CFC that could be used for religous.
