Are you sure you've been playing Civ? Just about ever Civ version in existence had wargamer strategies as the best performing strategies in both MP and SP(Deity or Sid level), except for maybe Civ I where the ridiculous score punishments on conquest victory meant you beat everyone down in combat, expanded like crazy and won an early space victory with only 1 or 2 opposing Civs left. I mean if its not supposed to be specifically focused on warfare stop making warfare the best and easiest way to win in every single version.

Well, this could either be by design, or through imperfect balance. I tend towards thinking it's the latter. I mean, it is a self-declared empire building and managing game. It makes sense for warfare to be one of the dominant, if not the dominant, strategic path in such a game. But that doesn't mean that the game is a warfare focused game. The focus is still on building and running an empire; the warfare is supplementary to this aim.

I really like the new combat style, because it reduces the number of units you have to cycle through near the endgame. If you played a huge map in Civ 4, the number of redundant units scattered all over the place was really bothersome. The idea that the stack o doom turns into one manageable unit that takes one space works for me. I was so sick and tired of attempting some diplomacy for a bunch of turns only to have a stack of 30 units come lumbering across my border.

What I really love is the fact that cities can defend themselves! What a great idea! The one unit inside the city is almost useless to have there if the city if far away from the frontier.

The balance to the combat is actually pretty good. The difficulty, even on the higher levels, is still kinda easy. I really haven't seen how you can do anything but a domination victory. It's the easiest one by a long shot.

I really didn't like the barbarian ships being able to blockade my capital with a trireme. I kept getting those stupid notices that all 40 cities I had just lost there trade routes. Sometimes the barbarian ship would be out is sight range and still be able to blockade. That needs to go away...
