is a score of 3300 in 1834AD in Regent ok? just trying to get a placement for what people usually score in this game.

Yepp, that's a pretty good score. The highest I got on regent was...
(...)
5419. I usually get 1000-2000 though. I'd say you're fairly ready to move on to Monarch. :goodjob:.

Generally, if you're scoring in the thousands / difficulty level, its a good score. For example, chieftain is the first difficulty level, then 1000+ should be your target, and so forth. Now, the total score can be terribly deceiving. It all depende on what the goal is. A person can win by space race w/ a small civ, so the final score could be relatively low. If a person aims for conquest early, the score will be much higher. I don't particularly agree with how early wins are weighted; however, early space race wins are quite impressive.

the time it takes to win affects your score? so like, its better to win early rather than wait til 2050 and let your population get really high and research future techs?

Yep, the earlier you finish, the higher the score. IIRC, the bonus is 2050-(year finished), with BC being negative. That is, if you finish in 2000 AD, you get a 50 point bonus. If you finish in 10BC, you get a 2060 point bonus.

Future techs have a tiny impact on your score. Not really worth researching them.

thats truely help info. thanks. im pretty much dominating this game. ive already wiped one civ form the map (it was quite devious, i tricked everyone else into goin to war with the one civ, and while there forces were split across boarders i moved in and just cleaned up).

under what conditions does communism become better than republic/democracy?

Honestly, I couldn't tell you. I stay far away from communism. Its a good government if you war a lot because it squelches WW. It also reduces corruption, bringing mucho gpt. However, you can't rush anything w/ gold, only in citizens (lose pop). I thought about playing a religious civ and switch back and forth from communism to rake in the gold, then spend under democracy.

When you have a huge empire than communism is OK as long as you keep on the offensive, going for military victory. Pull the other civ's into war and they will switch to communism too, so you won't fall behind tech wise. But democracy is the most powerfull goverment type. Too reduce war weariness, conduct quick wars, with your troops not spending too much time in enemy territory. In democracy use either cav or modern armor, because you can start your attack from the outside of your enemies territory.

I rarely use communism. Only when I was religious and conquered high pop low tech civs. Ten it is nice to hurry improvements in metropolises.

Liquidphire, winning early gives you bonus points, but it is absolutely not the best way to get a high score. Milking a game for the highest possible point total is achieved more or less how you assumed. Just check out the HOF, and you'll notice no correlation between year of finish and point total.

That said, many good players don't bother going for very high scores, as they're pretty easy to achieve by milking, and take forever to achieve. I disagree with Dojoboy that the game disproportionately favors early wins, for the simple reason that they're harder to achieve (regardless of victory mode). Winning asap is the most obvious way of dominating a game, but once you start to hit a wall, some players create personal goals, like Cartouche Bee finishing a game one turn from winning in as many ways as possible.

Good luck kicking the game's butt, regardless of how you go about it.

What! My world is crashing. ;)

Another thing about communism that I dislike for the AIs is that they seem to pop rush themselves to extinction, if they're in a protracted conflict. Their once large, impregnable cities lose all their population bonuses for defense.

It seems that communism is a very powerful war-monger government. I usually stay in republic the whole game if i'm playin a non-religious civ, otherwise I start in monarchy, fight wars, and move to communism when if becomes available. Its the only gov where stealing techs & espionage of any kind really becomes affordable (what else are you gonna do with the $$) and its the only gov that really supports huge empires. (though realistically, corruption in the U.S.S.R was a whole lot worse than we get in Civ3).

:-D

I like communism. Usually I wipe of other civs and have a continent to myself the first half the game. When I research communism I stay under my current government (republic, monarchy) and build as many police stations I can, then pick a civ, switch to communism and take over the world.
