Am I the only one that thinks this would be fun? Imagine having a gigantic empire at the end of the game...

Furthermore, has anyone tried it? Is it fun?

I sometimes place 22 civs (no city-states) on a duel map, which makes for funny results. If a civ decides to not settle on the first turn or is simply too late in the queue they're left wandering around forever.

I tried that once. It stinks if you aren't coastal, can't grow your borders to the coast, and no one will give open borders. But it was fun to denounce Bismarck and have everyone praise me and jump on the pile. Then he got wiped out

I have and still occasionally do. I have to turn on Raging Barbarians to keep me busy early in the game though, and start with sparse resources to force me to go wide.

As for fun, well it's really up to the player. I like that kind of game because I never know who I'm up against, and how much they will become of a threat when left alone.

I usually do have a huge empire by the end of the game...

Regardless of the size of the map, I will not add extra cities just to fill up space. There is a diminishing return on investment for extra cities in BNW, especially for science victories.

For example, I did a duel with a friend to see who could build the "better Poland." I ended up making 12 cities, but for the game settings and conditions, I think 8 cities would have functioned better. By the time the game ended, I think the tech/policy/gold and opportunity cost (when you build a settler you don't grow and you are not building something else) for the last cities didn't give me enough reward for my costs. If the game would have lasted another 50 turns then I think for sure the cities would have contributed.

Unless your goal is to play a game to maximize points. Then I would say you are in business!
