hull size effects component size?

i noticed that as the hull size increases the size of components increases as well. a laser will be larger and take up more space on a small hull compared to a tiny hull. this seems odd, why increase the capacity of the hull if you are also increasing the size of the load. it contradicts. bug or design?

True, but you can still put more firepower into bigger hulls.

yeah, i noticed the ratio allows for larger hulls to be armed with more even with the "penalty".

Well .. Its by design. What you don't see is a scaling factor. Which does exactly what you mention. There's also a connection to miniaturization. As in yes you will be able to fit more stuff in the same type hull but the actual size per component can go up too. I don't recall the numbers as I got this from another thread a couple days back, but someone was testing cargo hulls and engines and how much you can stack with what level. Long story short at extreme amounts of miniaturization there's diminishing returns. (You'd have to mod your races mini bonus to get it that high)

So it looks like its to keep miniaturization a good feature/thing to have but also keep it from being overpowering.

thanks. i was planing a fast moving design that could come out quick to start attacking colony ships and anything else undefended. i calculated where i needed to be on the tech tree to have the right sized parts to make this ship. when i went to build it the size of the parts was wrong and threw me off. now i see that i must consider this for future designs.

Yeah. Once you start taking it into account its ok. I remember expecting to do the same thing when I first started playing with it. In order to get what you wanted you may have to go a little bit farther on the tech tree.

Or you may compromise a bit and get some fast fighters out (as fast as you can make them now) and go for it while still trying to get smaller engines with the next tech.

Since you mentioned attacking weak targets... Have you tried putting a laser on a cargo hull and stacking up the engines? Maybe thats what you were doing in the first place. ;)

The Paper Tiger that Supreme Shogum suggests is great for taking out defenseless (or very nearly so) ships and starbases.

yeah, that's what i was doing. i had calculated how far i needed to go to have a 7 speed with a laser. then when i tried to build it i couldn't fit everything. that's when i noticed the difference. i did just what you said and researched a little further. i got 6 speed, and was able to completely shut down two opponents on a tiny map, normal difficulty. it was fun watching how they reacted. as soon as i had troop carriers i went for the kill. can't remember what the date was. i don't know if this would work as well with more opponents.
