Be kind, this is my first CIV map.
The map is a map of Earth circa 15,000 BC, at the dawn of an era known as the Hyborean Age (the fictionality of which I refuse to acknowledge). Atlantis has sunk under the waves millenia ago in a cataclysm that destroyed earth's first proto-human civilizations. Wandering bands of stone-age nomads are finally beginning the long trek back from barbarism. The Hyboreans, Shemites, Stygians, Turanites, Hyrkanians, and other races must first survive, then vie for dominance in the semi-civilized world. That's where you come in.
If this is a popular variant then I'll look into a larger map with authentic nationalities, leaders, and city names. At this time, the various races of the world are represented by the following CIV nationalities:
Hyborea: Rome
Khitai: China
Turan: Russia
Hyrkania: Babylon
Shem: Egypt
Stygia: Aztec
Kush: Zulu
Vendhya: India
Kambuja: Japan
Iranistan: Persia
All of these 10 races can be played in the game even though the map is only 60x60. I like a dense setup like that, but other players may want to try it with only 4 or 5 civs. According to the histogram all civs have a relatively equal starting position. Some have better expansion opportunities, but those who find it hard to expand generally have better land.
Instead of a settler and a worker all races start with a settler and a warrior. You may be attacked quite early by barbian bands. This is by design because civ3 players have become quite sloppy about defending their first settlement. The early Hyborean Age was a savage time, and only the strong survived. A barbarian raid or two may leave you vulnerable to a rival civ.
There are a couple of surprises awaiting the intrepid adventurer that are not displayed on the map image. This designer has discovered ancient documents deep in the R.E.Howard vaults, and has incorporated this information into the scenario. Rumors abound of the surviving mountaintops of Atlantis in the west, and fabled cities of gold in the Southern Ocean.
Oh, and there is no oil, rubber, uranium, or aluminum. There *is* saltpeter. Plan accordingly.
