1) Given the historic size of the Eurasian Core, I think the old world should be about twice the size of the New.

2) Africa, other than the trans Sahara routes from the Sahel and the upper Nile, was largely unknown to the Eurasian Core in Antiquity. I think there should also be a "Southern Hemisphere" added in the Age of Exploration, which, combined with the New World, would effectively double the map. At default setting, this should include at least one Archipeligo map (Indonesia / Oceana) and at least 2 continents (Sub Sarahan Africa, Americas).

I think this could be achieved in another way:

Compile a full map with settings you described, and add a debuff alike to Caravels in deep water; but to all units, and as a tethering base, use distance from the capital (something like "Logistics shortage: -2". Remove on Exploration age)

At the very least, I feel like deserts in the antiquity should stop movement like rough terrain does. Make it so that it's actually a trudge to make it through. I wouldn't necessarily hate that for all tropical biomes too. And yeah, in both cases if they had a damage value like they have on ocean, I think that would make some sense too, as a proxy for difficulty in those habitats. To me, if they had that, and also added the damage bonus to embarked unit on coastal tiles, maybe, you could actually have some interesting scenarios where you get like a vast stretch of desert that's actually quite a challenge to cross.
