Hyperactive barbarian spawning issue

My first game of Civ 6 went fairly smoothly. In my second game, I encountered an issue that was pretty much game-breaking. I was playing as the Aztecs, and had cleared several barbarian encampments in the vicinity of my capital. Then, a new camp spawned two tiles from one of my borders, on the other side of some hills. I thought this was gonna be business as usual, sent an eagle warrior to go clear it out, but before it could even get out to the camp, it got attacked by multiple barbarian horsemen. I purchased another eagle warrior, but it didn't matter. A new barbarian horseman kept joining the fray every 1 to 2 turns. This was within the first 75 turns of the game, so horsemen were a fairly powerful unit. They kept spawning at such an absurd rate that no amount of eagle warriors could hold against them, and despite playing through the same turns several times to see if there was something I was doing wrong, it inevitably ended with a horde of barbarian horsemen from a single encampment that had existed for less than 10 turns wiping out my army and pillaging all my tiles.

Is there something that was triggering such an absurd spawn rate for powerful barbarian units so early in the game? I was taking care of another encampment near my second city at about the same time, and it was only spawning things like slingers once every 5-10 turns. Yet the encampment near my capital immediately started pumping out nothing but horsemen, a new one every 1-2 turns. This issue pretty much completely screwed my capital. Has anyone else encountered anything like this? I'm trying to figure out if this was a bug or if something triggered this absurdity.

I have no answer for you unfortunately, but I've seen a similar situation. Was a bit later in the game. Saw the camp spawn, a bit later a few swordmen appeared. I thought I'd handle them fine with a crossbow or two, but they kept coming, with more swordsmen and crossbowmen of their own. Couldn't make any advance on the camp (and didn't want to divert further forces from my front against Saladin).

Later on the camp spawned catapults and even later a bombard as well. They marched toward my closest city, and I thought it was doomed (the swordsmen were dead but now they had musketmen as well), but then...they never attacked. No idea what was going on then. My crossbowman in my city whittled them down slowly, and eventually the spawn seemed to break, allowing me to finally finish that camp.

Was a quite an intense experience!

i was almost overwhelmed in my first game at the start, could just about deal with them but it was close.. now i ahve not seen barbarians for a while

Yep. Killing the barbarian scouts currently seems to be the most important thing in Civ 6.
As, if they reach their home encampment, they spawn military units like crazy

In Civ V I think you used to get a 5 turn grace period but at the moment you can get scouted within the first few turns, and if your warrior has gone in the opposite direction you are in deep trouble. It seems to make getting to horsemen a big priority (just so you can kill those scouts).

Yeah, these barbs spawn like crazy. I have units in the tundra area of my current game and by the time they move a few spaces a clear a camp, another one spawns where they were before moving. Back and forth, back and forth. It's like farming gold. I just wish I would have picked the belief that gives faith for barb camp clearing.
