I installed the game and when I tried to start the game I got the following:

The path MOS 10.2:timstark:Desktop:Games:Civilization contains a
slash(\), backslash(/), or a period (.). Please remove the character from the appropriate Folder's name and try again.

I don't know what they are talking about.
I changed the name of the folders I could find from Civilization lll to just Civilization, but the didn't help.

Can anybody tell me what I need to do to so I can start playing.

I'm running OSX with 1/2 gig ram.

Well, your hard drive seems to be called "MOS 10.2", and that has a period in it, and Civ3 doesn't like it. Looks like you'll have to change the name of your hard drive.

Civ3 code is a direct port from Windows, so it does checks that include this one that's looking for Windows-illegal characters in fiule path names.
