Earlier versions of the mod are available for download on the mod browser. Just click the version at the top there... it brings up a list of all past versions. The problems you describe are caused by things on the common checklist. It's usually something like an incompatible mod, different versions of Civ and the mod, multiple versions of a mod installed, or such.

I had the same problem - even after already deleting the cache. Did the steam file validation, and one file was faulty. After it re-downloaded the file (22MB), everything worked fine!

Good news. The odd thing about Steam validation is that I think it always says one file is faulty... yet when it's the fix to the problem, it fixes the problem.
