I reckon I understand 99% of what's going in Civ these days.. except for chopping.

Hovering over the chop icon tells you how many hammers you're going to get for chopping the tree. Usually it's 30, or if you're slightly outside your city, 25.

But sometimes it's 60, other times it's 57... is it dependent on the ground where you're digging up the forest, or are there other factors that are taken into account?

Its dependent on what you're building. For example if you are building Stonehenge and you have access to stone, which lets you build it 50% faster, you get 50% more hammers when you chop.

If you've got organized religion, police state, stone, marble, copper, etc., those multipliers will affect your forest yield depending on what you're building. So if you're building the Pyramids and have access to stone, chopping a forest will give you 60 instead of 30 hammers (double production speed with stone). You should use this fact to your advantage in maximizing forest yield.

Game speed and rounding also affect the hammer yield.
Also if you'll get more from the forest than you have left on a wonder or building like that (going back to the Pyramids example, say 30 shields left), you'll only get the bonus for what's remaining on the project, not on the full value of the forest.

To get the bonuses do you have to have a Building or Unit in production because I cut down loads of trees but things still take about 7 turns.

Yeah those bonuses really do add up when chopping for a wonder. The other evening I chopped 105 out of one timber location. I couldn't believe my eyes I was expecting 60 then I looked at the bonuses and realized wow a few chops and wonder is done.

thats not true the rest of the hammers will contribute to the next thing you build

Your a lumberjack and your OK.

As the ages advance you get more production from chops. I was building factories and getting 200 from a chop in the late game.

If your building Research/Wealth/Culture your chops are wasted. These things dont benefit from chopping.

If you'd normally get 60 hammers from a forest (for example you are building the Hanging Gardens and have access to stone), but there are less than 60 hammers left on that particular project, you won't get the full 60 because the bonus will only apply to production toward that project. So if you had 20 hammers left on Hanging Gardens (with stone), and chopped a forest normally worth 30, you'd get 10 hammers from the forest, plus another 10 "free" from the stone resource, finish the project, then have 20 left over to go toward the next item in the queue. All told you'd have gained 40 hammers from the chop, not 60.

Thanks for all your help folks...

Now I know exactly which trees to chop down and when .. I'll just consult my chopping list!
