Isolationist Bastard
I've been playing on a large map with 3 civs in Cheiftan (I know, I'm being a baby, but I wanted to start out with an easy game). I got Refining awhile ago, but I couldn't find any Oil squares on my map.
I (as the French) completely control one of the two main continents (I defeated the Aztecs early in the game) and the Zulus occupy about 60% of the other. I decided to settle the vacant southern portion of the Zulu continent in hopes of having Oil pop up somewhere.
I did find some Oil in the far north of the Zulu territory, but it was within the radius of Zulu cities. After spending several years afraid of their arsenal of Impi Warriors (they're tougher than they look, those scrappy guys), I decided to end the bull and send a fleet of Galleons full of Infantry, Marines, and 1 Settler. I built a city next to the oil, which immediately sparked a war between me and the Zulus. I was VERY excitied when their Impis came to attack my city, as I watched them fall like flies to my defense of 6 or so Infantry units. I then took my 3 Marine units to take over a nearby Zulu city, which had the Oil in it's radius. Once under my control, I rush-built an airport to make Oil available in all my cities. Shortly after that I updated all my Infantry to Modern Infantry units: the Zulus now have NO CHANCE IN HELL of mounting an offense against me.
And now I've got a couple of battleships out ther hunting any lingering Zulu Galleons. I'm probably going to kick some Zulu butt tomorrow with an army of tanks...yeah.
The one thing this taught me is that I need to be more aggresive in my military posture, and not be afraid to lose a few units in order to gain such a valuable resource like Oil. Starting wars over special resources provides a new and interesting facet to the Civ game.
