I keep sending to a friendly port but it doesn't heal. What am I doing wrong? The "rest and repair" is disabled.

Perhaps you don't have coal? If a unit needs a strategic resource and you no longer have it then it cannot heal until you regain access to that resource.

Yeah, you need coal to repair it. Was it by any chance the free Ironclad Yi Sun-sin grants? The only downside of having such a strong unit so early is you have to keep it safe, as no repairs until you discover Coal.

Yeah, typically you got it through a great admiral... you can only heal through promotion or raiding sea resources, the latter works better

Or coastal raiding if you are Norway hee hee. Good excuse to dow.

As a side note, if you do get the ironclad (or two) from the admiral, be sure to promote it before heading past the fjord, or you will lose one of the promotions... something I consider cause for reload if you didn't know this and it happened to you.

Suckers are fast enough I can scootch in and double pillage Vicky's dock and lighthouse in one turn, or in-and-out on a duck n' cover midnight run for a quick heal without taking a shot.

Frkn terror of the high seas (well, low coasts anyways). Who said Norway sucks?

I bumped into the same problem playing as England where I would research Iron Working and get free swords but they won't heal if you don't have Iron.

Right now melee ships raise city strength, so this admiral can still be a good idea.

Yi Sun-sin is a good idea in any case - while AI navies are not quite as formidable as they should be, a free Ironclad that early really makes it easy to rule the waves. It just takes a little care with pillaging and promotions to keep it alive.
