I hear Civ3 requires Directx8

I read on Firaxis' site that Civ3 requires Directx8. (In addition to a 1024x768 resolution.)

I hear horror stories about Directx8 not working with even some of the newer sound and graphic cards, AND making a lot of older games unplayable.

Anyone know if we'll be able to use Directx7 which is safe (from my experience) AND if we will be able to set the resolution to 800x600 for ease on the eyes?

The two computers I use are new and have a GeForce graphics card as well as Directx7.

I want Civ3. But I don't want to run the risk of messing up a computer that is working fine now on everything , old games and new.

Your thoughts?

If your system is too flakey to run DX 8.0 and 1024x768....your in a sad state.

But really...I think the 1024x768 requirement is because of the size of the units. Any lower and it would be HUGE!!! I think it's more of a recommendation then a requirement....800x600 would probably be difficult to play on, though.

The Direct7 probably won't work though. If it says DX 8 it will probably install it for you.....or update your 7 in the areas it needs. If it needs DX 8.0 files it's doubtful it will work with DX 7.0 files.

I've been using DirtectX 8.0 for six months now and I haven't had a single problem with it. All those stories about DirectX were mostly exagerated anti-microsoft propaganda.

I have also been useing DX 8 for some time, with no problems at all, so I would not worry to much about that...
