The 3 check boxes are insufficient. In addition to toggling bonus icons and hex yields you should be able to turn on and off:
* units, my units
* units, allied units (I'm not sure this is necessary, but I putting it in the list)
* units, foreign units
* improvements (they are sometimes a bit source of confusion)
* city labels (including the size number, religion, and seige health bars)
The game is all about how well do you data mine and yet it has no tools for doing so.
