I might actually not buy CivIV

I am also very dissapointed in civ 4. Amazingly, the graphics look WORSE than the graphics of civ 3. I played a rome total war demo, and was very impressed. It's combat system was 100 times better. I'm probably still gonna buy civ 4, but I will wait for someone to review it before I piss 50 bucks.

You're comparing the combat of Rome Total War to Civilization? Seeing as that is one of the biggest and main features of that game i'm not surprised it's "100 times better" - silly comparison.

And how can you criticise a game you haven't even played? That's like seeing some pictures of a beautiful sunset in Niger, and saying, "Man, the people there must be in Heaven with all that beautiful, amazing landscape to live in... i would love it there".

I appreciate that the unit sizes in scale to the cities look ridiculous, but it's already been stated that they will be easy to mod. Wait until you've actually played to judge the game, i say.

we don't need to completely trash a game that hasn't come out yet, but that doesn't mean people should assume that the new game is gonna be great either, as you said it, wait till you play it. having said that, most people are capable of making intelligent assumptions of a new game based on all the information we have and the rate of improvement we have seen in the past sequels. taking all that into consideration, it would still be prudent to judge a game. money doesn't grow on the trees, we have to kill ourselves for 8 hours a day (not counting commuting time) to make a few bucks. and then we also have to buy things other than civ games. so i'll say wait for the reviews before jumping into something and getting burned.

First off, why would people who are not interested in buying a particular game post on that games forum? Tired of Civ? Ok. So what the hell are you doing here?

I have Total War Medieval (and the Japan one but not Rome). They are both awesome. I love the battles in the Total War series, and the strategy involved and find myself going back to them quite frequently. But I still play Civ more often. I don't know why. I think the two games are different enough that they shouldn't really be compared. But Civ is just more emersing for me for some reason.

I hope that Civ4 will be a good game, but I'm not going to buy
it immediately, 'cuz I want to see what the reactions are in
the Civving community (i.e. this bunch). Another reason
is MOO3. Yeah, I might be comparing apples and oranges, but
once burned, twice shy...

Imagine the nerve of someone, not sure if they want to get Civ or not, coming to a Civ forum for information. The nerve of people who might not have a lot of money to upgrade their computer for this game, looking for details to sway them either way. Imagine the nerve of someone actually posting their opinion in a public forum. Imagine the nerve of someone getting tired of a many years old game looking for info about it's sequel.

It's laughable that people get bent out of shape over things like this. Some people are worshipping a game they haven't played. Some people criticize a game they haven't played. Does either group of people seriously affect they way you feel about it? I hope not.

maybe not. but their opinions will definitely affect my decision after they have played it.

So long as it doesn't have this: :spear: I'll be happy!

I'll get civ 4, but I'm not sure how much I expect from it. They are just delving into the world of 3d, civ 4 might be more of a transitional version. Workin out all the kinks. But none of us will know for sure til the game actually comes out.......

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUYING CIV IV IS NO QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU CAN'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mastertyguy calms down, and adopts a better solutions to anihilate the revolution:

HA! You can't escape ALIVE from the power of civ!!!

I'm likely to be among the first to pick up a copy. Back when money was a concern, I did pay close attention to others' opinions of games I was interested in. I quickly learned, though, that games a lot of people hated, I enjoyed and games universally praised I could not stand. Financially, I tripped several times on what I thought was going to be "that one game" that would at least hold my attention for more than a couple of weeks. I stopped worrying what others thought after that and just bought what I thought looked like fun.

That's exactly how i am like... i'm STILL waiting for "that one game", and at this point am just buying whatever in order to find it. I loved Age of Mythology, and it didn't get rave reviews. I loved KOTR2, which is widely considered to be not so good. So i'm going on my opinion now. Totally agree with you, good post!

KOTOR2 is not so good? Not what I heard...
Personnally, I hope to be the first personn in Montreal to get it. If I am not, I want to be the first personn in Outremont to get it.

Reason three: I'm broke.

The look of Civ4 is not important , the more important is the game itself.
ANd for being broke If I were you I will save some money even at the cost of starving from hunger :D

Generally people claim that the story is worse than KOTOR1. I mean it's great, but if you have already played KOTOR1 than you'll be a bit frustrated because you visit EXACTLY the same places, just a few years later in KOTOR2. The story in the second one is a bit, "Hmm, okay..." and the endings are really really poor. But yeah, i loved it regardless - other people don't seem to rate it as highly as i do though, which was why i used it as an example of underrated games which i like.

cIV only has to deliver on one promise to get me to buy it: if it is not "fully customisable" however, I will not buy it. The additional hassle of modding in civ3 as compared to civ2 was somewhat frustrating, but the game had enough appealing new features for me to overlook that (and it did come with more or less the same ability to edit, just a bit more frustrating to do). What I want is a much, much, much more customisable game because the fans always get it right where the developers get it wrong. They make better graphics, they make better games in the form of mods like RaR, and I usually have my own little preferences too for things I like to adjust. As long as the thing is fully customisable, and as long as the AI is good, they can really screw up all the rest or appeal to a new crowd or do whatever, because we can fix it.

Okay, okay I've changed my mind: I'm gonna buy it but I don't know if I'm going to play it extensively like CivIII.... Oh and Rome: Total War isn't as good as they say it is.

I play civ 3 for the combat, not the cultural or diplomatic crap. Civ 4's simplified ccombat is making me think about quitting civ.

I don't like how Civiv is becoming more like an RTS and less like a real strategy game. It's becoming more like a Nintendo game :) I do hope they make it for the Xbox360 or PS3 though since I'm not sure if my computer will run Civiv well ... my computer has integrated Radeon Xpress 200 graphics.

Reason three: I'm broke.

Just buy it like 6 months after it comes out and the price will be lower. Wait a year or so and you could get it for half price or less ... eventually you'll be able get it and all the inevitable expansion packs combined for a price LESS than what the original game was priced at ... THIS and also the fact that it is bound to be too buggy to play when it comes out is a reason I'll wait a while before buying it myself.

I'll wait until it is discounted to $19.95 or so. By then all the bug releases will be available.

To be very honest, the look and feel is not known to the majority of us. That iks the look and feel gotten by acutal play. Hopefully the beta testors will give feed back.

You WHAT?!!??

Civ FOUR's simplified combat? Oh gimme a break ... like combat isn't intensely simplified in every civ game up to this point. It can't really be simplified anymore than what it is now. What you need is a real turn-based wargame, and there are *plenty* of them out there whose focus is combat and who do a much better job of it than Civ. Go over to Matrix Games or something, pick up a copy of a real wargame. Civ has a much broader focus than just war.
