No, not one that will let me play the game illegally, god forbid. Nope, just one that can disable all in-game movies or simply skip past them all. I tried a google search but couldnt see anything (well anything trustworthy).

Currently unable to complete any space race games due to the movie crash, yes I have tried everything in the tech forums and then some. No dice... :(

Theres one to skip the intro movie in the config file but nothing about the space race movie.

Really would appreciate it!

Rename or delete the space race movie file. I believe it is "race.bik" in the "Art\Movies" directory. You should then be able to complete your spaceship victories.

Already tried. Was first thing I did.

Things I've done:

  • Renamed the .bik file
  • Renamed the sound that plays before the move
  • Disabled sound acceleration
  • Tried pressing enter as fast as possible
  • Playing with/without startup movie
  • Altered graphics card video display defaults to best compatibility
  • Tried playing C3C in all compatibility modes (will not start in any, requires a reset of the comp to start again)
  • Playing at default res and playing at desktop res
  • Using a newer Bink32.dll from another game
  • Viewing movie in Bink Player (movie is fine, no glitches)
  • Using the space race movie from Civ 3 Vanilla
  • Disabling sound in-game.
  • Playing final turn with a clean map.

In each case, the result is exactly the same. Nothing alters. I get thrown back to desktop. Have firaxis not included any way at all to simply skip the movie?

I certainly understand your frustration, as I had to deal with this myself. It has been too long, though, so the details are vague. I was sure it had something to do with 'hiding' the file from the game.

Did you rename or delete the race.bik file in the vanilla art\movies folder, or just in conquests\art\movies? My vanilla art\movies folder has a file named "race.bk", which must have been renamed due to this issue. Neither of my expansion art\movies folders have a race.bik or obvious renaming of the same.

Just added the line "Refresh=60" to the config line and the movie somewhat played, exceptionally badly but long enough for me to hit enter and get past it. May have just been a fluke though.

Will try removing all trace of race.bik from all my civ folders - looks like I need to nuke it :)

Thanks for your help - appreciate it!

I get this problem all the time, on both Conquests and PTW.

There are a couple of other things you can do:
1. Add the line "NoSound=1" to the conquests/ptw.ini files. This disables all sounds.
2. If you look in the movies folder, you'll see another couple of .bik files. One of them is named "security.bik" (or similar), and is an "Easter Egg" of shorts (go ahead, watch it - it's fairly funny). Rename race.bik to something else, then make a copy of security.bik and call it race.bik. Because it's smaller, it will usually manage to load and run okay when race.bik won't.

Just a quick question... how can you play/open the .bik files?

I just found the security_briefing.bik but my computer can't play it.

As I said, I already did both those things.

Darski - do a search for "RAD game tools" - you can download a bink file viewer from there.

thank you.
