I picked up this game on Sunday, because it was on sale on Steam for $12.50

I had bought 4 a couple years ago, however I couldn't learn how to play it.

So I've been having a great time in Civ 5, I really feel like I'm getting the hang of things.

However, I'm kind of stuck.

I'm playing as Russia...and Arabia irritated me, so I declared war on them.

I moved 7 military units into their territory, and began attacking their city.

They're all the way down in the red, but no matter how many times I attack the city, it will not die. It just regenerates a little health, and I attack and attack and it will not die. I've wasted a good 15-20 turns attacking this one city, and I'm becoming very irritated.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? :(

All help is appreciated.

Taking a guess here, but you need to attack with a melee unit to capture a city. Ranged units are great for knocking down the defenses without getting your melee units all chewed up, but they can't actually capture the city.

Sounds like you're bombarding with ranged units only. Only melee units can actually capture an enemy city.

edit: what he said ^^

AHHHHHHH.

That would be my problem!

I have all ranged units! I didn't know that a melee unit was necessary!

I'm still a noob haha.

Thank you very much for clearing this up!

City Combat
Cities may be attacked and captured by enemy units. Each city has a “Combat Strength” stat which is determined by the city’s location, its size, whether any military units are “garrisoned” in that city, and whether defensive buildings such as walls have been constructed in the city. The higher the city’s defensive value, the harder it is to capture the city. Unless the city is extremely weak or the attacking unit is extremely strong, it will take multiple units multiple turns to capture a city.
See “Combat” on page 54 for details on warfare in general.
Attacking a City
To attack an enemy city, order your melee unit to enter the city’s hex. A round of combat will ensue, and both the unit and the city may take damage. If your unit’s hit points are reduced to zero, it is destroyed. If the city’s hit points are reduced to zero, your unit captures the city.
Attacking with Ranged Units
Although you can attack a city and wear it down with ranged units, you cannot capture the city with a ranged unit; you must move a melee unit into the city to take it. Similarly, water and air units cannot capture a city, though they can wear its defenses down to nothing.
See “Air Combat” on page 119 and “Naval Combat” on page 59 for more info.

The game manual is a treasure trove of information.

Digital Distribution.
No manual to be found /:

On the Steam Library page, click on Manual under links. That enable you to digitally distribute the manual. Good Luck!

Edit: The previous poster posted while I was writing this.

The manual is also part of the game installation (whether or not you have a disc, since the boxed version doesn't come with a book). It can be found at (assuming PC):

I think they stopped making the manuals out of paper as the Civ 4 one was as thick as the box the disk came in - thicker I think!

Sounds like you've got the hang of simple city taking though, OP. Making plenty of range units is often the best way as you can do damage without having to take too much damage. I tend to try and go 2 range units for every 1 melee, providing those melee are well promoted.

I remember Civ 3's manual being about the size of a novel. atleast over 150 pages.
