I notice I do not like to play really powerful or really weak civs

I tend to play middle of the road civs like Russia or Egypt for instance.

Anyone else like this? What civ do you favor?

Egypt is not a mediocre civ. Wonder building bonus is great, War Chariots really make the difference early in the game and Burial Tombs are so sweet they are almost OP.

On topic: I like playing all civs, but I strangely tend to pick up the "weaker" ones sometimes - like Germany, Ottomans, England. They have A LOT of flavour if played with dedication.

I'm not sure I'd classify Russia as mid range, their UA alone makes them incredibly attractive for any warmongering game.

Their colour scheme, not so much.

I play America/Emperor/Standard/Standard almost all the time, because, well ...
1. I really like the B-17:)
2. I'm still trying to get the "Land Baron" achievement, and it's easier as America because tile purchasing is 50% cheaper.:p

Likewise. I generally find America to be one of the more versatile civs because I don't feel pigeon-holed into a certain strategy and usually let the map dictate my game plan. Plus it's just more satisfying to beat a comp that I know had a civ advantage over me.

I want to try all the civs, but the colour scheme is a big deal for me (as I always change names to fit my "Dragon Empire"). Yellow is such a naff colour for an awe-inspiring empire that I can't play Egypt.

And because I have some jingoistic hangups I cannot play a civ with the fleurs-de-lis. (yup: i'm english).

Pretty annoying tbh, because I love trying to get all the wonders...

Egypt and Russia aren't middle of the road civs, they are near top tier, at least when I played them. Russia and Egypt have great unique buildings (Krepost and Burial Tomb respectively) and have decent unique abilities and units, although I would lean towards Russia for having wars. For wonder building it's a no brainer to pick Egypt.

I tend to play France a lot, so i guess i like weak civs. I also like playing Japan and some of the native american civs too...which i have no idea where they stand in terms of strength...so don't know. I like playing songhai which i find pretty strong though.

Comp only leverages its UU by luck. America is underrated and solidly mid-tier:

1. Tactical war-advantage of extra sight is tremendous. Throughout the earlygame there are almost never surprises and that's huge.
2. The minuteman isn't as good as early UUs, but it isn't bad either. Because it comes with a promotion, its value is actually the amount of experience needed to reach your latest promo. It upgrades well and can hit power promos like blitz/march faster than other units, with the nice terrain boost. Rarely will you use them long directly, but they make fun rifles and later with their promo advantage + ignore terrain.

Not really sure about the b17, need to use it more. Regardless, civ V's USA is easily the best version of it in the series...because it has options that are actually useful in the relevant play time of most games! What a concept!

TheMeInTeam:

Which early UUs are better than Minutemen? I'm fairly sure which units you're going to choose, but off the top of my head, I would not generally rate them worse than UUs like Hoplites and Immortals, just because they come later.

Tech placement is odder than a Longswordsman or a Knight UU, but depending on settings, not that much the worse for it, especially if the plan is for an Industrial push anyway. The ignore terrain perk works wonderfully with Artillery.

In my current game I've been enjoying playing as a peaceful but continually backstabbed Egypt with just one super city, wonder spamming and having all other conquered cities puppeted and spamming trade posts in their land. Very enjoyable Civ.

I tend to play as Denmark. They're fairly good, but not quite as popular as Mongolia for conquest.

Definitely behind immortals ----> immortals useful right away but their health regen bonus upgrades with them too. Hoplites maybe not as much.

Longbows (murderbows) have so much oomph it's hard to argue. I also think janissaries are a bit better

Keshiks are way better. Obviously the longsword/knight UU in general are nicer, samurai comes to mind as something comparable but sooner as do those freaking N elephants.

Companion cavalry is still devastating even now.

Things like jaguar/mohawk are debatable though the upgrade retention of jags is useful and the guaranteed early power of the mohawk is notable. Not sure I'd put legions ahead or behind.

I'd probably rate CKN ahead too. CKN have a forgiving upgrade path to take true advantage of the 2shots.

Still, USA UU fits in similarly with many of these and is reasonably solid; the first time one's ever been able to say that about an American UU in a civ game!

Egypt top tier? I think not. It is impossible to hard build wonders other than hagia sofia on high difficulties. The war chariot is nice, but war elephants are better. The burial tomb is good, but not game breaking.

Russia in middle? Russia is arguable the strongest civilization in the game. Pends widely if u fight bots or players I guess. But a good old LSM/Knight spam punctures any player who hasent managed to kill the russians before medieval. For Egypt, well they got some pretty nice cheap happiness occationally a savior too if you find your empire expanding a lil bit faster than you would have anticipated.:king:
