I read the manual how do I establish Sea Routes after I have magnatism, map making

I won by domination but was never able to figure out how to establish a trade route by sea. I had explored the whole map, had the tech tree to qualify for sea routes but couldn't find out how to actually get my ships and all to begin trading with civs overseas. Can someone better expain what the manual does not on this subject?

Build a harbor in one of your coastal cities.

(and hope the AI builds a few harbors on their landmass - very occasionally they will not, in which case you will not be able to trade unless you build a city over there yourself)
