I always begin with a scout. But I also have an obsession with pottery. Some kinda obelisk is also nice. Geez, miners with their axes for chopping trees are good too, as are machete wielding masons. I never get to make a clay pot though, because I'll either be too busy herding animals or learning to read, never mind the mace-wielding suicides that I have to defend myself from. Later, my literate 'friends' also tend to covet my lands or my cities.

I don't think you can learn to read and write, unless you can first make pottery.
