So does any one know how? Its the last icon I have on my desk top and I can't remove it.

To actually remove it requires some registry editing which is not the way you want to go if you're simply trying to get an "empty" desktop. If you want to have no icons shown right click desktop->view->untoggle show desktop icons (that's what it is in Vista, probably similar for XP).

Nah, I've looked, and it isn't like that for XP. You can remove everything but the recycling can by right clicking, selecting properties, clicking the desktop tab, then clicking customize desktop, and selecting what you don't want. Recycling though is forced on you (unless you want to mess around with the registry...)

I indeed found a way for XPpro.

run>GPEDIT.MSC>userconfig>admin templates>desktop>remove recycle bin icon

Its great. Now I have a clutter free desk top but can still place things on there temporarily until sorting them out.

Whats the point of a desktop that you keep nothing on though? I mean, unless you plan to sit staring at it all day, its pretty useless to keep it so clutter-free.

Mine is usually 1/5th filled with icons and I can still always find everything I want with speed.

You'll notice that he has a dock at the bottom of his screen full of icons, judging by the stardock icon it's ObjectDock, which I use myself. Some people find these icons preferable to the default windows system of icons. They are more flexible and more customizable.

That dock would get mighty cluttered if it had all the stuff I have on my desktop. Plus, I have the quick-launch bar which has shortcuts to all my apps/games.

I never got why people want such customized icons. I need mine to tell me what the app is, not to look pretty. Although, I can see how sometimes looking pretty will tell you what the app is.

To that, I would say that it is possible for the docks to show text as well.

Also, I can show you my own, which I think it is entirely evident (to me, or anyone who has used it for more than a day) what everything does. The only exception being the ? which is my defrag utility, which I have straight up been unable to make a good icon for. They typical ones just don't translate into my plain BW style that I have going. For me, it is easier and faster to see what all of my icons do and where they are, rather than searching through a cluttered desktop of unstandardized icons.

Just use TweakUI.

I put upwards of 50 icons on the desk top during the day for text and mail and photos and blueprint files and on and on. If I left all the other stuff on there it would become a real pain sorting out whats what.

The remaining waste bin was just annoying because it was the only thing left and since I had one in the dock I didn't need the icon. The whole look and feel is now more stream lined and organized. I spend a lot less time moving things around.

Now to make my self a few dozen icons that match.
