I would Like to Play someone In the Mid 1600's or Higher

You say "Mid 1600s or higher". How much higher? And is your 1600 USCF or ELO?

I haven't played publicly for over 10 years, so I don't have a current rating. When I was at my best in the 80s, my rating was about BCF 150 = 1800 ELO = 1900 USCF.

Let me know if that's too high for you.

For your information, ELO = USCF - 100, and BCF = (ELO - 600)/8.
Thus your 1592 USCF is 1492 ELO or 112 BCF.

Enough of that. I am pleased to play you.

Thanx for the Info - Now I know.

Good! I used to play the Sicilian most of the time when I played for town and county.

NeelaX plays too? Is she rated? And what have your studies told you about this variation then?

Well I started out with Friz 4 and DL'ed all of Bobby Fisher's Games...I studied them heavely. And Neela and I really play the hell out of it.

3. c3

I know most of the opening varrations, and I have a strong middle game with it.
My 1592 is a result of my end game ;(

My favorite variation is..you guessed it...the same as BF's..the Najdorf...
I am most experienced with this varriation

1 e4 c5
2 Nf3 d6
3 d4 cxd4
4 Nxd4 Nf6
5 Nc3 a6
6 Bg5 e6

Our varriation...commonly know as the 0'Kelly Variation thus far... Is not even in my MCO-13, the only reason I even know about it is because of Chess-Life
It should be a interesting game from here.

I also bought IM Jeremy Silman's new book "The Amateur's Mind - Turning chess misconceptions into chess Mastery"
I've worked my way through the first 3 chapters twice now, and it has raised my level of play substantially, I would say around 125 points USCF.
I haven't gotten to another tourney lately though, although Neela is so much looking forward to going to her first.

I would personally rate her around 1250 - but she has grown by leaps and bounds since finished the old tactics book I had bought in high school.

PS, I told Neela I was speaking of her and that she should post here, I think she may play a game, so watch her, I will be too, I hope she does well.

Yes this is the O'Kelly variation. Not in your book of openings? Not surprising: it was never very fashionable. But this was the ideal reason for my playing it so often in matches, because people would have to think on their feet - they wouldn't have seen it in books.

The point of the variation is that if White plays "normally", Black gets a good game. To stand any chance of winning, White has to play "abnormally".

In the 80s, the best abnormal move was 3.c4 though this lacked a bit of dynamism. I once played this variation against International Grandmaster James Plaskett and he responded 3.c4. Because I'd found the "correct" response (3...Nc6) led to a rather rigid positions for Black, I had formed my own strategy based on 3...e6, and played this against him. It surprised him, and he spent longer on his 4th move than on any other in the whole game! Apparently it was a new concept. I have the slight pleasure of knowing that this transposition from the O'Kelly to the Kan variation became a standard.

Your choice of 3.c3 is another good "abnormal" move. There are several replies I could make, including a rather fashionable one by Basman. But I'll just stick to what worked well for me in the past.

Tournaments are certainly good for giving your play a boost. I remember in the 70s I used to play my boss every lunchtime at work and scored about 50% against him. One weekend I went to a tournament and thereafter I beat him ever time!

It was also good playing league games for a club. Too bad you don't have a working one locally.

I stopped playing - and therefore I stopped improving - when I stopped enjoying it. I used to play for a county 'A' team. We'd spend Saturday travelling half way across the country, spend 4 hours in intense concentration at 20 boards, then travel all the way back. After which I'd spent all day and maybe only drawn. I lost motivation!

Chess can get boring if you let it, but that goes for just about anything. I find that playing face to face with someone very interesting -- I enjoy the meditation of the game -- and oft I can “feed” from the energy of my opponent so to speak – LOL, I love to get into that “Zone” of play.

About the clubs, we'll only be in this town for another 18 months or so, And where ever we go from here -- There is sure to be a better chess following.

Well chess was never got boring for me. But this was midway through my previous marriage and any correspondence of goals between me and my then-wife had long vanished. The stress of playing chess matches just wasn't worth it, and once you reach a certain level you're "expected" to play competitively at that level.

That was all a long time ago. My marriage to Arlea is quite different and we have written our mutual support into our wedding vows.

On with the game...

Tartakover was playing this 80 years ago
smile.gif

That's right Smash! When I first learnt this, it was still called the Tartakover-O'Kelly variation. I think it's a pity that his contribution is largely forgotten nowadays. I think it may have still been called that up to MCO 10, perhaps even 11.

Johan, I've never read Chess-Life. I'd be interested to hear what it said about all this. Is it worth my trying to order a back-issue, and if so which issue number was it in?

stormerne the issue I had of Chess Life that mentioned The O'Kelly Variation was dated back in 1992, of that I am sure. Unfortunately all of the issues I had back then have been destroyed. ;(
On a wild tangent, before moving I disposed of all the magazines in my possession, I do regret it, but it sure felt right at the time…LOL

On magazine disposal: if you don't take risks you never grow.

On our game: well you've just given me the first surprise of the game. Though it was one obvious choice, I had not expected you would play the move you did. I'm taking the liberty of playing your next move for you.

I considered all the basics, but my heart tells me that the c5 pawn would destroy my position later in the game, Although your e-pawn will dominate the center there was really no other choice but to give up my castle to save my position. On my other insights I will save awhile

Fine about the name. But tell me... how would you like to be addressed and referred to in future? Johan was easy. The full three words every time is kinda clumsy. Single words are easiest colloquially. Or perhaps initials. Your choice.

And on with the game. No suprises. Castling.
