ICBM problems?

It seems strange that you can only fire ICBMs at squares within your line of sight. Problem is, most military units like modern armor have a range of sight of only 1 square in enemy territory. The rules also don't allow you to fire an ICBM when your own troops would be in danger. So guess what? In my last game I could only nuke border cities I had a line of sight to from my cities. The interior ones were impossible to nuke even after invading as my modern armor couldn't see far enough to both provide a LOS and stay out of the way. I had satellites also, which are supposed to reveal the world map, are they not? Anyone know a work-around here?

Anyway this seems kind of stupid...Since when did ICBMs require on the ground spotters? This isn't World War I where you are dropping bricks out of biplanes; this is nuclear war.

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, I hope there is a way around it or that it is just a bug. ICBM's are programmed with their targets while they are in their silos. Did the concept of Inter-Continental escape the developers? How did this stuff even get past quality control? Stealth bombers should be able to strike anywhere on the globe as well.

Perhaps you could use a Spy as a spotter.

Well, you can't nuke a city with a spy in it, as this would harm your own units. Nice idea, but...

Perhaps I could just march in with my stack of 30 modern armor instead. But then what is the point of nukes?

Ummm you sure your using the nuke properly. I was able to nuke any city i wanted even ones that where covered by fog of war and waay on the otherside of the world. You have to click on the launch button its the red button when you click on the nuke. Then it asks you to select a nuking square. Put it wherever you want and BOOM! things die :D and there is nothing like making your foe's territory covered in radiation :D

I was able to nuke cities with no LOS. BTW one of the ways of getting LOS is religion :)
However you can't nuke cities with friendly units in them. That could have been the case.

I know you have to declare war first through Diplomacy screen before ICBM can be fired.

Its still weird to nuke your fellow believers, but hey, theyre not your nation are they?:satan:

I dont understand, I could use ICBM EVERYWHERE except my territory, after I discovered satellites, and saw all tha terrain. The place you want to bomb has to be explored, but you dont have to actually be nearby with some unit with Line of Sight.

You should build a Fighter or Bomber and make an overflight mission. You will be able to see the city which you wanted to nuke so badly. Have fun with the radioactive tiles :)

Well I don't get it because I pressed the red launch button, but it came up with a green square (allowing launch) only in areas where I had a current LOS but no friendly units. Areas I could not directly see gave me a grey square and the nuke could not launch. I had no friendly units in the area, had satellites, and had explored everything. Very strange, maybe a bug? It does make me feel better to know that nukes are not supposed to work that way, but it doesn't help me in figuring out why they are not working in my game.

Well, this explains why I couldn't launch ICBMs. In Civ III, I could put one down anywhere, which makes sense. I had already won the game, but played on to see what happens when I dropped a nuke, targeted an enemy capital, and nothing happened. The button was red, but I thought it was supposed to be red.....

First service pack that comes out, this should be fixed. I should be able to target *any* enemy city with an ICBM.
