Hello all,
I've done the obligatory search for this and have found nothing, so if this has already been raised, please could someone point me in the direction of the right thread!
Basically I get a bit frustrated with the modern era in the game. One moment you've built the Apollo Program, the next you're sending a ship to Alpha Centauri. This just doesn't seem realistic to me, and I find that the modern techs in the game are around for so little time they seem pretty worthless as every Civ piles their resources into the Spaceship. Instead of turning the spaceship off, I had an idea...
What about moving the building of the spaceship back in the tech tree a bit, so that it doesn't get finished for another 100 years? That would make the modern era of the game more long-lived, and so a bit more exciting. There's also the opportunity here to introduce some more interesting things than just "Future Tech".
Some ideas, in no particular order:
I was also thinking that some of these "future techs", cold fusion, antigravity etc could be made even more elusive if we made it compulsory to build an advanced research facility national wonder before they could be researched - maybe call the wonder 'CERN' or similar?
Please excuse this random collection of thoughts, especially those which may not actually be possible! I have no modding ability whatsoever but would love to discuss these ideas further if anyone fancied helping me make the modern era in the game a bit more enjoyable...

Some ideas, in no particular order:
- Advanced Medicines: Requires Genetics & Ecology - can lead to our old favourite wonder, the Cure for Cancer.
- Nanotechnology: requires Composites & Genetics.
- Tissue Regeneration: requires Genetics and nanotechnology, can vastly improve healing rates for units.
- Synthetic Fuels: requiring Ecology and Combustion. Could reduce importance of oil in the game, increase movement for tanks etc?
- Teleportation: can build Transmat platforms, to be used as some sort of advanced "airlift" within a particular range of each Transmat. This would be a real future tech, for the very, very late game and could give someone the edge in a domination dogfight...
- Articifial Environments: available with Ecology and Genetics. National wonder - the biodome/Eden Project. Could even be used to resurrect the old idea of undersea colonies or enable civs to build on ice?
- Biostasis: can be new rerequisite for Life Support Module, available with Artificial Environments and Computers?
- Superstructures: new prerequisite for the Space Elevator (currently available way too early with Robotics) - requires Fibreoptics and Composites?
- Terraforming: Can be a development from Artificial Environments and Superstructures which enables a "Moonbase" wonder... workers could maybe also improve the desert/ice/tundra tiles?
- Mass Tourism: An early modern invention - can lead to a Theme Park national wonder, increasing a city's commerce significantly. Can this also be used to make very old wonders worth more money?
- Artificial Intelligence: Requiring Robotics and Genetics: Potential for new units such as Drones - cheap to produce but not very strong footsoldiers which could be used to swamp defences.
- Antigravity: A progression from fusion and flight - could lead to more advanced aerial units?
- Radar: Needs radio and flight. Increases sight lines of all air and naval units.
- Stealth Tech: self-explanatory. A development from Radar. invisible planes, anyone?!
- Cold Fusion: Another progression from fusion - would further increase production and could be a prerequisite for the SS Engine instead of ordinary Fusion?
- Virtual Reality: prerequisites are Computers and Fibre Optics. Potential for a world wonder resulting in items to trade like Hit Singles, Hit Musicals etc - "Hit VR?"
- Equality: Something missing from the modern techs at present, to represent the Civil Rights movements - kind of a modern liberalism tech. First to discover could receive a great person. Potential national wonder - court of human rights. Would give a diplomatic bonus between Civs that had it?
