Identical Map Generation (not random!!)

i have a weird feeling that it's more complicated than this...

for my experience, my first game outta the box and my second one has completely different maps with the exact same settings... yet by the third game it starts looking all the same... (under Play Now)

it wasn't until I used custom game that the problem stopped... I'm not a comp nut, I have no idea bout n e of the ini files or random seeds or whtnot, so i'm 100% positive I never touched n e thing...

I hope a permanent fix comes out soon :-/

I've not experienced the same map twice in a row, but that's because I rarely play with the exact same settings twice. I always try and change up one little thing each time (arid instead of temperate, for example) and lately I've been trying the archipelago maps. I take it each of those kinds of options adds itself to the random seed, or would it give me the same map even if I chose the same temperature?

I'm posting to report that Sirian's idea worked for me. As long as I edit my ini file before every game, and post a new number, the map is different. (At least it was a different the one time I tried it... I'm still working to beat that map, so I haven't tried doing it twice).

I have a unique problem perhaps. My maps are different. The seed numbers after i turned on the logging are different. But no matter what size of map I chose it is always the same size map. And that is similiar size to the tutorial which I played through. I went into the mod section in game and chose "none" and then hit ok thinking that might be the cause. Nope. Still the same size map no matter what I chose. And this happens in Play Now and in Custom Game. Anyone else finding this?

I got that same map in my first game. Just installed the game (worked flawlessly on a Radeon, btw) and started "Play Now!" on a standard continents map in noble difficulty. I built Rome in the middle of the NE continent.

This is the only problem I've experienced after two days of playing, apart from an annoyingly slow interface (gonna buy myself more RAM - have only 512 MB).

Gonna do the manual thing for my next game.

for the record, i've not yet received duplicate maps - i've started MANY maps, as i'm doing some heavy modding and frequently have to restart...

to lend some weight to the uptime thing - my computer usually runs for *weeks* at a time, without restarting... I'm not sure if that truly has an effect, but...

I'm gonna try running a few generations and copying down the random number it uses.

Well, even shortly after a reboot, i'm getting totally random maps:

[8051.953] DBG: SyncRandSeed is 8013857, MapRandSeed is 8013857
[8219.578] DBG: SyncRandSeed is 8194801, MapRandSeed is 8194801
[8384.437] DBG: SyncRandSeed is 8368199, MapRandSeed is 8368199

maps have nothing in common with each other...

I have also been playing making maps at 48-25. The random thing always makes them with no water for Pangea maps. I went in the ini and changed the map generator from 0 to other numbers to test. By the way does anyone know how high this number can get? Playing with numbers starting at 1 can take 10 or more minutes a map:( I found that 3 and 38 gave me a good map but about 15 others I tried were all bad. If I made a huge map (32x20) with map 3 it looks the same but with only 10000 plots compared to the 19200 with the other map size. Can anyone else try this and see if 3 and 38 gives a good GIANT map or is it just me. It still takes a while to generate. When I tried a 64x40 map it just crashes to desktop after 20min or so. But when Im on a large map thats 19200 plots it takes a long time to change or add land types for some reason. I can add things like units and resources no problem?

Thanks Fen

Crap... I've got that same map right now, except it did not come from the "custom" map area, but just a normal "Continents" selection. I started in the middle of that longer middle one - its actually a pretty sweet spot. I've been experimenting game starts to 1AD with it.

Sirian, you know what would be totally awesome?

If the developers could get the game to use something like this site to generate seeds. Truly random numbers instead of the hokey programmers pull by getting a pseudorandom number with the time.

That would be cool. Requires a net connection, though, among other things, so I wonder how practical it could be.

"Random Civilization" isn't.

I don't use Custom Maps (so far). I've been using the "Play Now!" button.

I was always choosing "Random Civilization".

First game, I was Isabella/Spain.

Second game, I got Isabella again. I assumed it was wild chance, and restarted again *without quitting the application*, and got Alexander / Greece.

Third game (which was after restarting the application), I got Isabella, Alexander, and finally someone else.

I asked a friend, who was ALSO "randomly" Isabella in his first game.

So that seems distinctly not random. Also, if you keep choosing new things without quitting the application (quitting to Desktop), it will produce new random things. So anyone who is testing to see if repeated maps are random or not -- make sure you are quitting the application to the windows desktop between each test!

Good tip, Doyen. Haven't played the game often enough to get any duplicates myself, but perhaps it helps the others who got similar results.

I have also played a game on that map, but gotten others if requesting different types of land masses.
