If someone made an SMAC movie...

OMG so nice! Make more!

Wheel of Time had one of these on a website, unfortunately I lost the link. For those of you who don't know ~ Wheel of Time is a large (9 books so far?) fantasy series written by Robert Jordan and containing a cast of thousands, with somewhere in the vicinity of 40 active 'main characters'

Hey! It's 10 books! What kind of wotmaniac are you? :P

Good suggestions for actors! :D

Must add this on to my previous story idea: The easiest way to destroy a base with the least powerful unit - Take a pickle jar full of mind worms and get a single soldier to simply chuck it into the base. Can anyone say loophole in perimeter defence?

 Whoopi and Chris as the Alien leaders.:rotfl:

I never could find SMAX so I am just doing vanilla SMAC.

Captain Garland: Sean Connery
Morgan: Sydney Potier
Miriam: Definitely Reba McIntyre(lol)
Yang: bald Jet Li
Santiago: Angelina Jolie
Deidre:
Zharkov: guy who played Lev in Armageddon
Lal: Saddam Hussein(oh the irony), seriously though, Kofi Annan

---------------------------------------------------------

Actually I would really like to see this kind of thing be made into a web-series like Red vs. Blue. That would be hilarious, "Lal, I want you to know I always hated you." "Me too Yang, now die you pr***."

Split the factions into two blocks where both blocks are made up by factions sharing the same ideologies (well, a few at least). Then make it a typical good vs evil movie. Throw in a few conflicts between the different factions in the blocks, and we have a reasonably good plot.

Just a possibility (for plot)..

When the Lucasarts game Tie Fighter came out way back when, there was an underlying story behind the campaign missions. My memory is a little shaky, but bear with me. Your 'avatar/persona/character' began the game as a refuge from a rebellion on a planet that was then subdued by the Empire. Many of the character's family/friends were killed in the battle, and he came to see the Empire as a force for Justice and Peace (not altogether true, but it's a perspective thing). He is trained as a fighter pilot and over the course of his career is slowly seduced by the more evil elements in Imperial society until his loyalty to the Emperor is unquestioned. Point is ~ the story was told from the personal account of someone In a totalitarian nightmare, and it gave a human voice to the Empire.

So what if a movie based on SMAC used a formula somewhat like this? Pick a typical Hive citizen, born into Yang's totalitarian society, indoctrinated by the dream of sacrificing one's identity to promote group success. Now let that person act as a character and as a narrator. Find ways for him to relate the wars between the Hive and the various other factions. Perhaps he is a member of the Hive military and is separated form his unit, captured by Spartans (who may also be at war with the Believers ~ three way war?) Expose him to each of the other cultures/factions through his adventures and let his perspective slowly change from the monochrome focus of his original background to an understanding of the merits of All the factions. Perhaps there is a heroic arc for this narrator/main character with him ending up as a new global leader beginning an entirely new faction or, perhaps he ends up replacing Yang and bringing change to the Hive.

I can see problems with the idea, but at least it's something I don't remember seeing much in recent movies from Hollywood. Heroism and unifying leadership seem to be frowned upon in war movies these days.

With good reason. This is a disastrous combination.

Sort of like the Allies heroically uniting against Nazi Fascism and Japanese Imperialism. Er, wait, that would be a disastrous combination?

Well darn.

Knee jerk reactions are counterproductive, no matter what they oppose. If you didn't like the story idea, feel free to create your own, that's what the thread is here for. If you don't like the politics it supposedly espouses, come meet me on the OT forum instead. ;)

That's a classic and usually stupid hollywood formula. Dune was a compelling and interesting story because while their was a distinct good and bad side, they were not black and white. Everyone had their own agenda they tried to follow through.
Just like SMAC. But you're right of course. The plot should be more intertwined, since we have seven factions. But not all put together. That would be too much to keep track of. Maybe three or four.

I think a single movie is a terrible idea considering the possible complexity of interactions. Dune was an okay movie, but it simplified that universe and lore into basically the Harkoneen/Empire vs. the Freeman/Atreides. The Guild and Bene Geserit are barely side notes in the movie. Having said why I think a movie is bad. Here is my idea for how this could be laid out.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Considering there is already a considerable amount of lore and background, there could be a plethora of angles to approach this from. One of the better and more feasible is flash animated shorts that are very common to the internet. Many of these are series now that come out in short installments of 3-8 minutes an episode. I will suggest a few, with plot and concept and style.

PLANET DREAMS

Concept: All the leaders communicated with Planet through dreams many times during their clinical hibernations. It is obvious from the sidenotes during the game that Planet could read some of the memories of the leaders and vice versa. We should assume that Planet would interpret these memories different than the leader, but that those memories are remembered through the leaders prospective. The same event on Earth may appear substantially different from two different leaders memories. Also, humans would see Planet memories differently, and both would see how the other remembers events on Planet that involve the leader and Planet or Planet and another leader.

Style: These would be vivid but strangely colored dreams. That means there would need to be strange transitions of scenery and mismatched elements. Things would morph into the form of thought they represented and sounds would not necessarily make sense source wise. The point-of-view would be a selective omniscience, only being ignorant whenever ignorance was felt by the mind. Most important would be the idea of an alien feel, especially to dreams interpretted by Planet or about Planet.

Plot: The plot would not contigious, but rather look at several different issues. Many times the dreams of many leaders and Planet would be meled together into a mosaic, as they interact with each other. Some of the main topics that show the mind of the Planet would be the life and death cycle, the concept of thought and being, the presence of humans on planet, the end of the earth, the earth, death, community.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for a movie, I think it should be directed by Guy Ritchie and be in the style of his other movies("Locked Stocked and Two Smoking Barrels", "Snatch"). You could make it about petty criminals, drones, intelligence personell, and soldiers from each side and their crazy happenings centered around some object.

Actually I was thinking of :

Brave German toops following an Idiot
Brave American troops following another one (and I aint french). :D

Also: I was only comenting your note that: "Heroism and unifying leadership seem to be frowned upon in war movies these days"

AND NOT your movie *idea*, hell... I'll watch almost anything if it is at least half good. We arent exactly spoiled with great SciFi movies (actually great MOVIES period).

About "Great Leaders" I am a Spartan sympatizer because history teaches us that whenever we relinquish our duty to think for our selves we end up in a mess and it doesnt matter if the Great Leader is elected or not. Jerks are jerks wether they lead from Washington, Moscow, Paris or Stockholm.

Safety comes from a well armed citizenry that is willing to defend their homes but one has to beware of Overseas entangelments, as cautioned by the greatest american that ever lived, namely George W.

no no no!!! Not THAT George. I mean George *WASHINGTON*

So much for Poly-Tics. ("poly" means "many" and "Tics" are a bloodsucking parasite).

On with the idea: your [Elgalad] idea is pretty good but I still hope for a story arc.
Rather than just a single movie. You can develop the characters more fully that way and make for a better elaborated story.

THE EMPATH GUILD

Concept: True empaths could, as the quotation said, understand and penetrate the minds of those whose symbols they understood. This kind of penetration would allow and empath to crack most security and recognition systems rather easily. Combine that with years of combat and technology training and you have an elite covert agent. This follows the web of empaths and their fight, spy vs. spy.

Plot: The Gaians were the first to unlock the secrets of the empath. Deidre's agents soon go out and infiltrate the datalinks of the other factions. An empath captured by the Spartans reveals to them the power of this new form of training. Many Spartan empaths are trained and sent out against the Gaian empaths. From here the plot could go all kinds of directions.

Style: Realism would be about the same scale as 'Cowboy Bebop' in terms of coloration and scenery. This would work well since the focus will usually be military facilities or back streets. Combat will be fluid with a heavy emphasis on quick resolution. In general empaths rely on suprise and their ability to discern tactics through symbols to overwhelm and dominate normal soldiers. They will use combinations of ranged weapons, explosives, and close combat techniques. Empath versus empath battles will still be resolved in maybe half a dozen volleys. Very important would be a variety of weaponery without making effects or strangeness an overpowering factor. Also, movement would be very important, even in scenes featuring heavy dialogue.
