Datalink One
The Earth is the cradle of the mind, but one cannot stay in the
cradle forever.
-Konstantin Tsiolkovsky,
The Father of Rocketry, Datalinks
We must detach soon!, rasped Miriam Godwinson. The Unitys reactor core is unshielded, and is reducing the ship to shrapnel!
Working on it! replied Wescott, Miriams head scientist.
We have six minutes, not six days!
Almost
there!
Outside the porthole, the explosive bolts holding the seven colony pods to the Unity detonated, sending the pods spiraling down to Planets surface.
Praise the Lord., uttered Godwinson. As the pod went down on its predetermined path, she thought back to her days as a preacher in the Christian States of America. She was born just a month after upper New England seceded from the crumbling USA. She now made it her agenda to do continue the CSA on Planets soil.
Miriam, announced Wescott. Were entering Planets atmosphere.
The portholes started to seal shut, as the atmosphere tried to reduce the pod to a cinder. Before the porthole closed, Miriam caught a glimse of another colony pod, before the shield overlapped her view. She moved her attention to the colony pods occupants. Most of them were found near the Unitys reactor core. Most were ill, some worse. But to Miriam, they were Gods chosen people.
After awhile the pod landed, and planted itself upright in the ground.
Miriam decided their new nation needed a name. She christened it the Lords Believers.
Westcott, name the base New Jerusalem.

Academician Prokhor Zakharov watched as his workers built Research Complex no.1 in atmospheric suits. A few colonists had learned the hard way that Planets air had almost no oxygen in it. However, it does have plentiful amounts of carbon dioxide and nitrogen, perfect for farming. He turned to his aide, Fedorov.
Federov, Id like to talk to you about the Malcontent problem.
Some workers were not content with the working conditions in the University of Planet. Three Malcontents had recently rioted, killing one of University Bases finest citizens, or Talents. This behavior had earned the Malcontents another name: Drones.
I think I have come up with a solution. It is a small electric stud stapled into the spine. When activated, it will send signals of pain to the cerebellum.
Hmm, Zakharov mused. It was a brutal punishment; the other factions wouldnt like it at all, except maybe Yangs. But Zakharov had grown up in post-Soviet Russia: riots lead to rebellion, rebellion leads to anarchy, anarchy leads to the destruction of civilization. He decided.
If another riot unfolds, staple the lot of them.

UN Peacekeeper Pravin Yal was in one of the very few moments when he was truly at peace. UN Headquarters had just established a network node. A library on steroids, the network node holds the entire canon of human history and culture, and can be accessed by almost every digital device in the base. Subjects are organized into datalinks, multimedia files similar to Wikipedia entries, but much more factual.
Three months after planetfall, and his base had already taken on a signature look: big white metal buildings, with colorful onion domes and spiky antennas at the top. Like a Soviet
Taj Mahal, thought Yal.
Yal turned to Lora, a technician, and asked: How is research going?
The lab boys have come up with a prototype tractor.
Yal groaned. All that work for a tractor ?
Well, they called it a terraformer. Yal perked up. The ecologists on the Unity had, after long range scans of Planet, built such a device. Yal stroked his long beard in thought.

1 Year, 3 Months Later
Colonel Corazon Santiago thought back to the time when the Spartan Federation was little more than a coup in Guatemala. A give to the poor, take from the rich organization. Or so it seemed.
When the Unity was announced, a glimmering ship to leave the hell that is Earths nuclear fallout and diseased masses, everyone wanted on. Some just came like sheep to the front of the UN Unity Project Complexs electric fence, but Corazon was smarter. She bribed a guard to let through the checkpoint a shipping container marked Emergency Rations. It contained a dozen Cryopods, and a fission power source, direct from Morgan Industries.
Although Unity Executive Officer Sheng-ji Yang caught her, he admired Santiagos cunning, and offered her the position of chief of security.
When the shuttle docked with the Unity, she strapped into a (this time legal) Cryopod, and fell into a 40-year sleep.
When she awoke, the Unitys engines had been ruptured,
and the seven most important leaders on the ship: Miriam, Santiago, Yang, Zakharov, Skye, Yal, and Captain Garland were awoken to fix the problem.
However, a stowaway was discovered: Nwabudike Morgan, CEO and founder of Morgan Industries. He had funded and commissioned the second half of the Unity modules, and wanted some payback. He commanded the architects to add an extra Cryopod to accommodate him.
After Garland was shot and killed by a female colonist, the remaining 6 leaders (and Morgan) split the Unitys occupants into seven factions.
Thats painful thoughts, Corazon, reveried Santiago. She had lost some of her best men on the ship.
As she looked out of the bunker that is Sparta Command,
She saw some Spartans outside, testing something. She strained to look. Outside, there was a reconnaissance rover, Unity model. On its hood, she saw a slotted tube facing forward. She wondered what it did, until a laser flashed out of the tube and melted the steel target. Ah, so they finished the applied physics project.

Lady Deirdre Skye felt great. She was in her garden. The Unity ecologist had more or less filled up Colony Pod 7. They had together founded Gaias Stepchildren with the base Gaias landing at its head. As she walked through the garden, she saw among the terran plants, a strange one. She looked closer and saw that the native fungus surrounding Gaian territory had crossbred with a mushroom. It was about a foot tall, and its green top laced with fuzzy orange-purple flesh. As she drew closer, she thought she heard a faint voice in her head.
Earthdeirdre
How
What
Who are you!? There was no response. Then the nervous cry of a colleague.
Maam! cried out Scott, head Gaian scientist.
Yes?
Report from tower 3.
Ah. Gaias Landing was founded in a rough area, filled with rock towers. It had been a simple manner to hollow tunnels in the tallest tower, then take apart the pod and put the pieces inside.
Life, Skye. We have found animal life!
What is it like?
Mostly wormlike creatures. Nothing sentient
Deidre pushed the voice panic aside. Probably a side- affect of my poor sleep. Hmm. I wonder what the first meetings will be like.
Like it so far?
