I believe Ethiopia is very good civ for new players. As a new player, it's very unlikely you'll have more then 2 or 3 cities in total, so their Unique Ability (UA) is very helpful. Also, Stele (their Unique Building or UB) lets you start on Religion without having to invest in Temples, which lets you try additional gameplay element.
From BNW civs, I find Shoshone very easy to get into, they're really simple and useful early game, which is most important for new players.
i agree completely with this. Ethiopia is a very forgiving civ without being overpowered or overly specialized as well as shoshone.
I always play non-war oriented races, more culture or diplomacy or science so i recommend building tall for that type of game(a few huge cities)
Don't get hung up trying to plop a city down every place you see resources. This is the number one mistake I see new players make. Now there is a style of game that plays that way but I find it a lot more difficult and every new player who tries ends up with a negative happiness which really hurts your cities growth. 2-4 cities is a good number, and if you go 4 that 4th one shouldn't be until well into the game.
