Any ideas for how immigration could be simulated in the game? I've mentioned it, and now so have a couple others. Please post your thoughts! :)

TheLopez has an immigration mod, where unhappy citizens will eventually leave the city, reducing the city size and forming an "immigrant" unit, which has no combat abilities and a movement rate of 3. Somehow it calculates another city to immigrate (emigrate?) to (either one of its parent civ's cities, or a foreign one), moves there, and then the unit is removed and population to the city is added. Could be interesting.

I was thinking it would be pretty cool if there was a chance unhappy citizens would just form into some settler/defense units belonging into a new civ, and would venture out to found a new civilization. The reason I haven't really suggested this is because it would not be cool to have a group of people just get up and found a city right outside your borders, but I like the idea of new civilizations emerging as unhappy immigrants of older civs.

Could happen in a large area of uninhabited land - similar to early emigration to america by puritans and other groups.

Perhaps if they do emigrate and found a new civ in new lands (only if there's open land nearby) then any settlements nearby could have half of the culture they produce be parent culture and they could get a good diplomatic boost towards their mother country. The culture they produce could slowly move from being half and half to being all culture of the new civ over time to simulate them breaking away from their old country culturally. Also, that way, the mother country could take over the land after a war and it would be easy to assimilate the new territory (similar to the how the Mormons left the United States for what is now Utah and then the U.S. later took over the area with no resistance). The new territory would also more willingly vassalize voluntarily. With the amount of culture from the mother country, if the new territory is vassalized or just remains in good standing with the mother country, it would be likely that eventually the assimilation game mechanic in Revolutions would kick in and the mother country would get the land.

Of course, if the mother country is preoccupied or just ignores the new civ, then they might eventually become a force to be reckoned with. This would make Revolutions even more realistic than just having barbarian cities start new civs, because most new civs that happened in the real world were offshoots of existing ones.

StormLord's idea sounds good.

Implementing TheLopez's mod but making sure this only occurs when there is open land nearby would work. The player might get the following choices: (1) Give the rebels their cities, (2) Start a revolutionary war against resulting civ [big penalty for relations], (3) Leave the nation and found a new one [small penalty for relations].

not to long ago i made a nice immigration idea:

  • Throughout history immigration has been an issue. Take a look at the world's newest nation, Kosovo, a country founded on immigrant Albanians. How come is this not implemented in the game?
  • Maybe theres been a recent conquest, and a captured city's population wants to return to it's original country, so it immigrates there
  • Border City, Population from another Country just joins the border city, happens alot throughout history, makes sense. Infact it's sorta already implemented in the game with culture.
  • Soldiers capture a city, and there lonely have no homes etc. so they settled down in the new city that has been captured.
  • The Romans made a Colony, but it's pretty underpopulated, the Roman citizens, seeking land, wealth, etc. immigrate to the new world.
  • Another conquests. i've captured a city, but it's filled with enemy population, i "deport" the population back to there homeland.
  • I've captured a city, but it's fileld with enemy population, i turn the population into slaves and send them to work in other cities as slaves. there ancestors settle down in there new city.
  • Rome captured a city, but it's filled with Russian population. Rome bring some romans from other cities to make my new city more "Roman"
  • My empire/city is so poor/backwards/horrible living conditions/unhappy/low life expectancy/seek better paying jobs/etc so i'm immigrating to another empire/city.
  • i made a new city, and i need workers in the new city, so i'm sending citizens there to work.
  • New immigrants can bring a new religion with them, as well as there culture.
  • if to much immigrants are in a small area, civil war may be about! which can lead to cities becoming part of the original immigrants country!
  • There could be a feature where you can control where you want immigrants to go.
  • Illegal immigration can be implemented into the game, and can cause unhappiness etc.
  • Finally a way to include Ethnic Cleansing! (which will probably create tons of unhappiness.
  • maybe a map that can show you immigration paterns throughout the world?
now only if i could get it into a mod comp.

maybe before immigration is implimented the nationality and religion mechanics should be enhanced. it would be cool if new cultural groups could arise within a city because of religious splits within the old nationality, or if two reletivly equal cultrures in a city could gradually blend into a new cultre (like the Metis of Canada).

I like the merging idea - two (smallish) civs merge to form a new one. Some tweaking of the annexation feature could achieve this.

This is planned, particularly for two small rebel civs who broke away from the same parent (though there will also be less of that soon).
