Noticed a nice little tactic earlier today. I playing the Celts (again!) as a facist state and was the dominant power and tech leader on a map consisting of 2 continents (and some minor uninteresting occupied islands) after a long time as Democracy. I owned one completely and was warring on the 2nd which was occupied by myself, the Incas (at war) and the Greeks (MPP, also at war with Incas).

The war had been stretching on for a long time so the Greek Democracy was straining under War Warriness, propped up only by my luxeries trade for as much GPT (Gold Per Turn - not sure if this is an official abreviation!) as I could muster. The deal had already gone beyond 20 turns and so I could cancel it as soon as I wanted. this is where I spotted the tactic. I cancelled the trade, really annoying the Greeks. Not a problem, Alexanda thinks and sues for peace, which is accepted. I immediately sold a couple of tech to the greeks for high GPT again knowing on my next turn the Incas would attack and trigger the MMP, which they did. Suddenly anarchy reigns across the Greek empire as all that war warriness (+20 truns remember!) comes flooding back. Also 'cos of the tech deal the Greeks can not afford any more luxuries from me!

As I figured this causes a change of government for the Greeks, started by 5 turns of anarchy. This of cause causes a shift of power back towards me!!! HA-HA!!! A plan of mine that worked. Of course once the new Greek government was in place it was communist (i.e. lower commerse vs no war warriness) meaning most of his commerce went to paying for those techs, stalling his research program almost completely and allowing me to maintain a good tech lead!

In addition the 5 turns of anarchy also blunted his war machine (no re-inforcements / replacements) allowing me to squeeze ahead in the war vs. the Incas and win the game by Domination!

Not bad for my first game on Regent (on lowest argression level admittedly!).

Now this is where you all tellme you've been doing this for ages! :wallbash:

Yes, diplomatics can be a really sharp sword, and when a player knows where to put it, things get a lot easier. Well done! :)

Sorry for the confusion. Trading with the Greeks, at war with the Incas.

Good show! I'll have to try that...

And yes, GPT is an official abbreviation! :)

My own favorite way of impaling the ai on its own greed is to build peacefully, but when a civ attacks me, I take their country.

I just got done doing that to the Vikings (taking their country after they attacked me for some daft reason).

It is fun.

Even more fun ignoring him when he realizes his mistakes and tries to get peace with me.

Yes, we have. ;)

I do the same thing too (i.e., trade a tech to a civ for gpt when they have a huge stack in my territory). MPPs help, too. It also helps to give them a huge rep hit.

I love doing that, except I do it to a larger scale by getting the second most powerful nation cuz of course I'm the most powerful. Anyway I have the whole world declare war on him and, trade away lump sums of gold for gpt and watch as the AIs economies crumble and the governments revolt, while I sit back and relax. Good job on learning and using this tactic effectively.

I prefer just to kill them all as soon as possible before they get me.

And if they threaten me, they're the first to go.

I love GPT agreements, Ive received +2000GPT from other civs.
But could never understand when the AI would be willing to trade. seems that gives just what it doesnt need (surplus i think or im confused?) Even if it is a very low amount (4gpt for a tech).
The spy should tell us their financial situation...

i hardly use these sort of diplomacy tactics as an extreme builder. I hardly ever attack other civs unless they have an important resource. this is my third year playing civ iii and i have yet to demand tribute :)

I'm a mass war-mongeror / mega-builder / Science-Freak.

I like to build huge cities with huge armies to crush all underfoot regardless of strategic value.

I research as much as possible and then wheel and deal as much as possible selling the sciences to greedy computer civs for large sums of gold which I use to improve my cities to research faster and build more better military units quicker so I can attack an enemy and demald large GPT so I can improve my cities to build more units and increase my tax slider to research better technology so I can build better units so I can RULE THE WORLD (Maniacal laugh) !

(say that all in 1 breath!)

Nice, I haven't tried to cause an AI gov't change yet!

What about trading a new governemnt to a civ, like Republic or Democracy, then wait for them to go into anarchy wanting to switch to that government and then attack. Hopefully their anarchy will last long enough that you've hurt them enough that when they can finally make reinforcements, it won't matter much.

i have a favorite tactic. the colonization expeditionary force. I like to play on maps with lots of water and a bunch ful of ships loaded with troops ready for action. whenever trouble arises or I see a piece of the pie I can get my hands on...sail away sail away. this is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much fun when playing the vikings

A TRICKY:
If the AI construct the Wonder that you were building,Give him a
governemnt tech, then anarchy will stall his building progress.
But on SID,AI will switch gov immediately.
