I'm new to Civ within the past few weeks and one thing I can't figure out is whether there is any point to improving tiles that are more than 3 spaces away from a city? Especially border cities that are on the edge of my empire, later in the game they can expand 4-5 spaces out from the city tile but if I can't ever work those 4th and 5th tiles is there any reason to improve them? Thanks!

only strategic/luxury resources. your city can't work the tile but you still gain the resource.

Ok thanks, I wondered if I was wasting time by having workers build farms so far away. I guess that would be a yes :D

Plus moai 4 hexes away still give a bonus to neighbouring moai that your city can work. Don't think there are any other improvements that work this way though.

Sometimes, if my workers have nothing else to do, I will improve 4+ tiles that are within the 3-tile radius of another Civ's city just in case I decide to go on a rampage later.

I usually keep the my cities very small so that I can have a lot of them. I don't build too many improvements especially farms. TPs are still some what effective, but I mainly focus on resources.

For the sake of the game's scope, I really think they should have kept the tiles the city could work down to two tiles away.
