In a Rut

Im in a rut,can anyone help me get out..

problem is im too good for emperor which i find boring now-but not good enough for diety and i always end up getting beat-what do i need to do to improve.?
also,i usually play huge maps-do i need to reduce this to have a chance?

Smaller map sizes tend to be easier, so you could play large deity to get used to it. Then move back to huge. Or start with a strong civ like iro's or mayans.

I agree.
The trick I find when moving up a level is to start with an Agri civ.
This helps offset the advantage the AI gets with an extra settler on deity.
If you really want to even the odds make sure you are the ONLY Agri Civ in the game.

Also emperor is a level I still play for cultural victories. Especially 20K is fun at that level.
Above emperor the AI builds culture too fast for me.
