Almost every game I play, I end up being last place in the Histograph. The first things I do is

  • Build a warrior first
  • Build a settler
  • Make another city
  • Make another warrior
  • Make granaries
I irrigate, mine, make roads, do everything I've read here.
But I always end up in last place. Does the Histograph even actually matter? How can I get in first place? How can I do better?
How many towns should I have after a few turns? My enemies always seem to have alot more towns. Should I build for settlers or warriors? I need alot of questions answered :(

Don't worry if you fall behind in the histograph (unless that is how you planning to win), you can still win without the highest score. I don't really know how else to help you.

Edit: I might be able to help you if you say what difficulty level you are playing at.

Well, I can usually get to #1 on Chieftan. I tried Regent, but I was technologically behind horribly :( So I'm trying Warlord.

Maybe you should try to delay your first settler, and go warrior-warrior-warrior-granary. And know how to use your workers. Your goal should be to have the most (and best) land at the end of the expansion phase, not to have the highest score for the whole game. The Histograph is stupid

My suggestion is that you need to keep expanding until there is absolutely no room left to expand. Since being 1st on the histograph usually means you have the largest territory, I would recommend a wide city (city-tile-tile-tile-city) placement. Only concentrate on troops/workers/settlers during expansion, then when you decide your expansion is over build temples to expand your borders therefore boosting your score due to territory increasement.

In my opinion the histographic score that early on isn't very improtant. Keeping up in tech and military is more important than you score. You will still have plenty of time (maybe 450 turns) to catch up even if you fall behind in any of those.

Some Questions: How do you cope after expansion? Are you still falling behind in the late game? Are you being destroyed early on? Do you even get to the late game?

I always survive till the late game, and I usually am the one who is on the offensive. After expansion I usually just focus on roads and mines/irrigation, and making the expanded cities bigger :P

Im going to post my saved game to see if anyone has any suggestions as to what I could do in this current game. (If you have to move this to Strategy, go ahead)

Okay, then I'm having trouble seeing what the problem with your play is. Your main goal is to survive and then to thrive, as said in the manual. You're not going to thrive first, if you see what I mean. Do you have the lead in score and in tech in the late game?

Btw, I don't see any saved game in the post.

Oops. Here's the saved game.
My problem is that I never win the game and I'm never #1, whether I'm techno advanced or not :(

I'm sorry, but there is still no save in your post. Are you trying to attach it or upload it? If you uploaded it, you can just tell me what it's called and I can find it in the uploads 7 folder.

Histograph in the early years is not important. You can use it just to compare the AIs to yours. Don`t worry. It doesn`t matter.

You said you`re sometimes technologically advanced but never the #1. Technology doesn`t give any score except future tech. If you want a high score, big territory early and happy citizen are very important. This is usually hard to get. So, just concentrate on expanding. Grab any lux available. Believe me, regent is not as hard as you think. Just do everything in its order.

It`s not wrong to produce settler first then granary. I use this strategy sometimes. Just ensure that the settler will be finished just after pop increase to 3 even after you build just 1 warrior then build granary. You can settle near to every lux and resource first and then fill in the gap. This can deny the AIs from those luxs and resources.

I'm sorry to bother you again, but there is nothing in the zip!

Build all the troops you can support for free - check the F3 screen.

Troops will help greatly to scout, make first contact, pop huts, and clear barb camps, and keeps the civilized barbarians off your back.
