Incentive to leave forests?

Once railroad is discovered and assuming you have enough workers, there's basically no reason to leave forests standing, except on tundra. On plains, with railroad + mine you can get 1 more shield than forest+road, and on grassland you can get 1 food and same number of shields with a mine and a railroad even if the grassland doesn't come with a shield. In previous Sid Meier games, it always seemed to me that he had a bit of an environmentalist tilt, that is you always had to make sure to keep pollution down and the environment clean in order to win. But this seems to contradict that, as except on tundra you'll be rushing to cut down as many trees as you can.

Is there a rule or something that I'm missing that would give me a reason to leave the forests standing, other than not requiring as much worker labor? Do they reduce pollution/global warming at all? Or should I just keep my axe sharp?

Strategic resources appear more in forests...reason enough?

You will get the ressources even if you change the tiles.

Think of rubber appearing on plains after you cut down the jungles.

I always leave them (but not jungle) just because it seems mean to kill all the e-birds and e-squirels that live there.

This may sound a little daft, but if a resource runs out and can only re-appear on a forest/ jungle tile, wouldn't it be an interesting tactic to (assuming that the AI is not very conservationalist) plant loads of forests, thereby giving you a higher percentage chance to get new recources. Also a RoP deal would allow you to cut down the AI's forests.

Lab Monkey in a moment of idle nonsense

That's what I thought too, until the Grey Knight told me otherwise.

Does it make sense?

I think all resources are set when the map is created. So it doesn't work...:(

Forests only have two natural resources which can occurs - rubber, and uranium. Rubber will never jump, and uranium can show up in mountains. So you're not in bad shape usually to clear forests.

If they changed global warming to be counteracted by jungles and forests, it would be dicier! But until then, I will hack away.

Cheers,
Shawn

I will plant forests in any tile I cannot work (that does not fall withing a city raduis but is withing my broders) to slow down enemies during wartime and also give my units an extra defensive bonus in case of war.

I do the opposite - I cut down all border forests so that my fast moving units can easily battle an invader in the open plains, not in some forest giving the defender an advantage. And the way I play, I'm never expecting them near my cities anyway. Defense is THEIR problem.

The game should never permit the cutting down of all forests.

If there are no forests pollution and erosion would go way up. How would all paper products (from cardboard boxes to paper towels) get made? What about peoples' need for national parks?

Putting a worker on auto usually results in it cutting down forests. Bad idea.

BTW, I was told months ago the game is so flawed that even if you REPLANT a forest you cannot harvest it in the future for extra shields!! In a game that lasts over 6,000 years, you should be able to regrow forests many times, certainly after Engineering. Another bug, of sorts.

It was my understanding that this was changed months ago to close an exploit. People were using as many workers as they could to repeatedly plant and clear forests, essentially getting free shields.

i never cut forests
1)nice graphics
2)they are a symbol of life
3nice shields
4)they give uranium if you have luck
5)slow the barbaric attackers
6)defense bonus

so the only thing you may remove is the jungle
disease problems are bad!
hack away the jungles!
:hammer:
