I've been working to quantify terrain values to better pick a site to build a city. During this process, I found a few discrepencies between the manual and the game.

Jungle is listed as -1 food

In reality it is -1 food -1 commerce (or maybe just cancels out commerce from rivers)

Forrest is the same, but listed as +1 food

It is actually +1 food, -1 commerce (or just cancells out river if there is one)

The manual lists forests as adding +0.5 health to a city. The civilopedia lists it as +0.4. In reality it is +0.4.

Also, I can't find any mention of river health or defense benefits. Through experimentation, rivers seem to provide a +50% bonus to defenders. However, I can't produce ANY benefit whatsoever for health. See my previous thread for more information.

Its also helpful to realize that a city adds +1 production and +1 commerce to whatever tile its on. I couldn't find that listed anywhere either.

Forests and jungles cancel the river commerce bonus.

Rivers give the habitable spaces around them the "Fresh Water" property, as do freshwater lakes and oases. If a city is founded on a square with that property, it gains +2 Health.

Ah yes, I see. My methodology was wrong. I was testing with the world builder. Aparently, the game makes a one time check when you build a city for fresh water. After that, as far as I know, it never checks again. This does cause a problem though, if you want to modify the map at a later time. You can never add (or take away) the fresh water property once it has been set. I hope this can be changed, either by firaxis or through modding, because it could be a usefull tool for scenarios.
