Infinite range

I'm trying to give my stealth fighters infinite bombard range, like an ICBM, but without getting blown up. Problem is they aren't causing any damage to the targets out there. Any ideas?

The problem is that Infinite Bombard Range flag only works for units that do the bombard action (air units use the Air Bombing action instead).

In Vanilla Civ3 you are SOL. In PTW, you can set the range of attack to 362 tiles. Not infinite, but good enough.

BTW, to reflect reality Stealth Fighters shouldn't get this, but the Stealth Bombers should.

I tried a lot of things, including giving the unit bombard, and setting it as a land unit. I got the range just fine, just no damage on the targets. Not even a message that the bombing failed. That's what I can't figure out.

Why would you want infinite range for stealth bombers? If you get this working, you also give AI bombers infinite range.

I find it much more enjoyable to have my homeland safe from harrassing attacks by distance alone and have the wars on foreign soil.

Are you trying to do this for a realistic feel...because if you are then I should tell you even today the Stealth bomber need to be station relatively close to their target to be effective...For example the U.S. needs to have airfields in both Saudi Arabia and Turkey to wage an effective aerial battle in Iraq.

Exactly, because without aerial refueling I don't care how stealthy the bomber is it ain't making it to the target to drop the bomb.

Perhaps a stupid question, but is the target covered by the fog of war? If so, and the bombing run damages a unit (as opposed to destroying terrain improvements/buildings, or killing population) then you won't be informed of any damage.

or if it hits empty land or sea.

Here's the whole story of what I've been doing, just to clear things up a bit.

I started editing a stealth bomber (not a fighter as I first said, typo) to have infinite range, just for fun, not to be realistic or worrying how the AI would use it. Sometimes I like to play with super units just for a break from the normal games.

I tried a bunch of stuff, then started a game with one bomber as an initial unit to test it. By flagging infinite range, and bombard, I was able to target any unit or city, and I got the sound effects of a bombing run, but no damage took place.

I thought of that too, and stationed another unit on a hill just outside the city I was trying to bomb. I even set the bombard strength to 100 so I'd be sure of not missing. Also changed the bomber into a land unit to see if that changed anything. I bombed many things in my tests, including stacks of units, single units, and cities with and without defenders. Not a single one was damaged, and I never got a message that the "aerial/artillery bombardment failed"

What about Terrain Improvements? have you been able to take any of these out?

I guess it's a moot point, since you are stating that your unit on site saw no damage. . .

Frustrating, I know. i tried to create a long range scout and had my game crash on me. I should have gone back and re did it, but I was less into creating than I am now. I might resurrect it. . .

Good luck! Let us know if it works, cuz that's a mod I'd like to do.

Taper,

Ok now the edited preferences make sense.
I would never use them, but as a variation to see what the possiblities are, it makes sense.

For super bombardment variation, change cost of tactical nukes to 10. ;-)
