Why don't fishing towns send food to cities?

Reading this thread made me realize that towns don't grow anymore when specialized. Which means there's probably less of a point in specializing during the antique age because you probably still want to grow your borders a bit at that point

You can always switch them back later when big city growth slows down (and you get additional food bonuses, so growing the town gets more efficient).
I like the tradeoff puzzle, but it will probably drive obsessive optimizers crazy because of the complicated math involved. But it definitely needs better UI support, it's an absolute clickfest right now to monitor this.

I really wish specialized towns still grew…
You can switch back freely. Although, at that population size, it will usually take many turns to grow. Build urban districts to reach powerful yields and move your rural tiles there instead of wasting time on growth.

I believe you are right in that there is less urgency to specialize in antiquity. It really becomes important when you start filling your cities with urban tiles and specialists.

Do ports not allow a connection between towns and cities on different continents or islands?

This is my understanding without having the game in front of me at the moment:
For trade/food purposes, you need Fishing Quay.
For factory goods and railway networks, you need Ports.

I believe both are limited by your trade range (10 tile path).

10 in antiquity, 15 in exploration, 20 in modern.
