This is a general problem with any AI, in that hours of gameplay (along with the number of dedicated users of this forum) will almost always decipher the AI'S weaknesses. I think a few simple improvements to the AI could have made it much more viable, but they weren't undertaken for CIVIII. So, what is my solution for CIVIV? Well, I think they should make it so the AI can be changed and updated with either patches or expansion packs. Just think if when conquests came around, instead of adding a SID level, they improved the AI in key areas, which they easily could have gotten from this forum.

A long beta testing period would also help, but I understand the problem that has on margins. Adding modified AI to patches or expansions should be viable, and give more reasons to buy them.

Just my 2 euro-cents, feel free to flame me. :p

I think that there will always be a learning curve or as you call it a gradual deciphering of the AI. I'm far from being an expert but IMHO programming AI is one of the basic structural components of the game, and pathcing that as much as I would like it will probably remain wishful thinking the way games are made and mearketed...still a good idea though...
