Initialized Renderer failed.

Hi everyone!

I got this game (and AoE3) a couple of days ago, and strangely enough, I am having the same problem with both games. (AoE3 says "failed to initialize Direct3D")

When I try and start Civ 4 (patched to 109 from this site, though the game has never started), I get this message:

Initialize Renderer failed. (blah blah)
-width = 1024
-height = 760
-flags = 0xc
-hwnd = 0xa01a4
-adaptrid = 0
-deviceid = 1
Error:Creation failed: Could not match desired fullscreen mode

I am running an Athlon64 3700+, 2GB of RAM, a Sound Blaster X-Fi, and two 6800GTs in SLI. Software-wise, I have XP Pro and DirectX 9.0c.

I have the machine plugged up to my Samsung DLP, which has a native resolution of 1280x720@60Hz. I have tried reinstalling Civ, running the DirectX installer, updating my nVidia drivers, and chipset drivers. I have also tried it with SLI turned on and off.

I think the problem may lie in that my display simply doesn't support 1024x768, as it isn't even selectable in Windows Display properties. The game loads in windowed mode, but since it is running 1024x768 windowed, the bottom of the window is cut off. Also, there are no resolutions in the drop-down resolution box when I actually get the game to come up, so I can't select a different one and then switch back to fullscreen mode.

I tried editing the civilization4.ini file to reflect my screen's height and width, but that has no effect. When I do this, the error message continues to say that it is trying 1024x768.

I would chalk it up to crappy programming of the game or my drivers or something, but I am having the EXACT SAME issue it seems with AoE3. Interesting, especially since every other game on my machine works great (WoW, HL2, Quake 4).

I hope someone on here knows something that I haven't tried, because I have $100 of new games here that simply don't work. Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can provide!

I only tried the newest patch (109). I didn't/don't know that there is an older patch I can try. I would think that any patch would include other fixes, too, though.

Any hints?

Thanks!

patch 109 is all there is so far

And if anyone reads this who fancies helping me, I can only get to 'init engine' on the loading and then it freezes and i have to ctrl-alt-del.
Things I have tried:

Unpak fix.
Patch
Re-install and the above in different combinations
Downloaded Omega drivers (which ones are best?) tried most recent and some older ones.
Tried meddling with settings movies off - smartgart off etc.
Praying.

I have 1.7g P4, Radeon 9800 SE and 640 RAM

So if lots and lots of people are having this problem... why has there been only one patch that clearly doesn't fix it?

It is pretty maddening to pay $50 for something that doesn't work.

We just installed Civ 4, after having trouble that required downloading the patch (1.52), it got further on the startup. But then, as it said "INIT XML (uncached)" , I got this error:

"Initialize Renderer Failed. Check DirectX installation, Latest Graphics Drivers and Graphics Settings Parameters:

width = 1024
height = 768
flags = 0xc
hwnd = 0x2e013c
adaptrid = 0
deviceid = 3

Error: Creation failed: could not match desired full screen mode."

My PC has an Intel 82810E built-in graphics adapter and my drivers are up to date. At first I thought it was my system, but with Civ 4 needing the patch and all, I figure this is another bug. Any ideas?

It's driving me nuts! I got this for my son for Christmas, and I'm about to throw my PC out the window! I've never had this type of problem before. I noticed Best Buy didn't have 4 on the shelf (only 3). Is Civ 4 unusually buggy?

My 11 year old son and I are hoping someone can help us!

Thanks! :)
