Hi everyone!
I got this game (and AoE3) a couple of days ago, and strangely enough, I am having the same problem with both games. (AoE3 says "failed to initialize Direct3D")
When I try and start Civ 4 (patched to 109 from this site, though the game has never started), I get this message:
Initialize Renderer failed. (blah blah)
-width = 1024
-height = 760
-flags = 0xc
-hwnd = 0xa01a4
-adaptrid = 0
-deviceid = 1
Error:Creation failed: Could not match desired fullscreen mode
I am running an Athlon64 3700+, 2GB of RAM, a Sound Blaster X-Fi, and two 6800GTs in SLI. Software-wise, I have XP Pro and DirectX 9.0c.
I have the machine plugged up to my Samsung DLP, which has a native resolution of 1280x720@60Hz. I have tried reinstalling Civ, running the DirectX installer, updating my nVidia drivers, and chipset drivers. I have also tried it with SLI turned on and off.
I think the problem may lie in that my display simply doesn't support 1024x768, as it isn't even selectable in Windows Display properties. The game loads in windowed mode, but since it is running 1024x768 windowed, the bottom of the window is cut off. Also, there are no resolutions in the drop-down resolution box when I actually get the game to come up, so I can't select a different one and then switch back to fullscreen mode.
I tried editing the civilization4.ini file to reflect my screen's height and width, but that has no effect. When I do this, the error message continues to say that it is trying 1024x768.
I would chalk it up to crappy programming of the game or my drivers or something, but I am having the EXACT SAME issue it seems with AoE3. Interesting, especially since every other game on my machine works great (WoW, HL2, Quake 4).
I hope someone on here knows something that I haven't tried, because I have $100 of new games here that simply don't work. Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can provide!
Nolen
