I forget how too it's been a good 10 - 11 years since i played this game

Click on the leader's name on the scoreboard? Or right click their portrait in various menus, I believe. There's also a shortcut where you alt- or ctrl-click on their scoreboard names, but one of those shortcuts opens the trade menu and the other instantly DoWs, so do be careful not to use those unless you're certain you're using the correct one.
