Install Error - intro.bik

I recently got my fiance CivIV and tried installing it last night. It installs just peachy until it starts loading movies/intro/intro.bik.

My computer will stall and the process percentage drops to 00, while idle raises to 98. I tried installing 4 times, and keep getting hang-up on that same file.

This version of the game is the Special Edition and I bought it brand-new from EB-Games.

Is this a known issue? Or am I just cursed with bad luck?

Any advice would be wonderful!

Thank you!

what are your computer specs?

got another cd/dvd drive in the tower you can try?

I had this problem before with another game (failing to complete the install). Turned out it was a problem with the Drive

If I am correct, it is a 1.2Ghz with 256RAM; not sure on the vid card.

No, we only have the one CD drive and have never had problems with the drive before.

If you've got any anti-virus running in the background, try temporarily disabling it while you install.

When the puter 'drops' the install, I think the drive stops synching with the disk. This can happen when system resources start to be overly taxed, like when an anti-virus butts in and trys to scan a file.

Windows XP, right?

256MB of RAM, if correct, is not nearly enough memory (are you sure you have that right?). I would imagine all of that and more would be used just running the operating system.

For whatever reason, this game is a total memory hog and the official minimum system specs given for it are generally seen to be rather too low for it to run comfortably. From reading these forums you will see that people can get by with 512MB to run this game on XP, as I did to start with (a standard map size game in the later stages can demand 300-350MB of memory!), but that 1GB is even better.

I think that file is the introductory movie - I don't know, though, whether you have an install problem or simply an under specified PC. Sorry I can't offer any actual practical advice!

If you read the Minimum Requirements it says 256RAM (right on the box); so, yes, I do have enough for Minimum.

Though, will be upgrading soon.

I think most people would agree that that is the bare minimum. I notice on the Civ IV support site that they seem to have qualified that further by saying:

256 MB RAM (Windows 2000) / 512 MB RAM (Windows XP)

Which just reinforces my point that for XP you will need 512MB or more for a (just about) playable game. XP is a memory guzzler and Civ IV is just as bad if not worse; 512MB should be considered a bare minimum in my humble opinion because it won't be long before the game starts using virtual memory and that's when it slows to a crawl.

I did run across that while searching to fix my problem (which is why I said I'll be upgrading) but at the moment that is not my problem.

My problem is the CD hanging up on the intro.bik file every single time I try to install the program.

Now, I understand lack of RAM will not allow the program to play and/or load properly, but it should have no effect on whether or not the CD can be read or not.

Fair enough, I think we got sidetracked there. ;)

Have you tried giving the CD a wipe, maybe there is a speck of dust on it at the crucial point somewhere. It's a shame one can't copy the lot to the hard drive and install from there (I presume that would not be possible with all the copy protection things on the media). I don't know what else to suggest, sorry.

Oh, just one last thought... can you copy that .bik file onto to your hard drive? If you can then that would indicate that at least the drive is working and can read it properly. That would leave the possibility of a corrupt file (unlikely I would have thought) or some problem with the install routine I suppose.
