Install Failure with Vista

Hello! Currently I own the Special Edition Civ IV and the Warlords expansion. I installed them on my laptop so that I'd have something to do during the downtime I have at work. Once installed and patched, I've had no problems playing them on the laptop. Yesterday I purchased the Beyond the Sword expansion and tried to install it. It starts up the autorun just fine, I choose English and the InstallShield Wizard prompts me for the License and if I want to install GameSpy and to register. Once I click 'Next' and 'Install' the setup checks on my DirectX runtime components and then dumps me back to the desktop.

I've downloaded the most recent DirectX9.0c due to the shader library error from Warlords. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the entire game series to make sure it wasn't that. I tried a solution mentioned in a thread with similar problems where their install failed and they then installed the BtS 3.13 patch to finish the install. That didn't work either. I'm stumped as to why this is crashing. BtS installed perfectly on my PC with XP at home, so now I'm stuck with the notion that it's Vista. ( Grrr  )

My laptop specs:
Intel Core2Duo 1.66 GHz
3 gigs of RAM
Vista Home Premium 32-bit

Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

I can only tell you that it is not Vista, as BtS installs fine on my Vista machine.

Sorry that I cannot be of more help

I have the exact same problem, word for word.

Worked fine on my old XP laptop, but my new one with vista...nope.

Ideas??

I too am having this issue. Been playing Warlords for a couple of weeks and decided to upgrade to BTS. Running Vista on a new laptop (64bit Vista) and get that same dump to desktop right after searching for DirectX components.

Grrr! Did anyone find a fix for this? The only things I've installed are Civ 4, Warlords upgrade, Norton 360 (made sure to disable this) and now BTS.

Edit: Well, I got it to get past that point by downloading DirectX 9 and running the installer. Boggles my mind as Vista runs DirectX 10. But now it errors out during the install with an odd message:

Feature: DefaultFeature
Component: WarlordsComponent
File: C:\Civ 4\Beyond the Sword\QFPZjxqqjtjtjqttjtppptptjttqqwxyxxwwwwwwwxwwwxwy\
Error: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

Edit 2: Game uninstalled fully (warlords and main) and then reinstalled (main, not warlords). Working great now! Woot!

Geez!! Guess I'll be reinstalling the game again without Warlords to see if that helps.
