Hello,

I found a lot of similar questions, but I don't find the key !!!
I have a legal version of Civilization III, v1.16f (buy with my Packard Bell computer). It works. When I try to install the v1.29f patch, it doesn't work.

The message is :
Cannot locate the Civilization III CD-ROM
Please insert the Civilization III CD-ROM, select OK and restart application

But, the DVD is already inserted ! Has anybody got the solution ?

Best regards.

So you bought a computer, and it came with Civ3. And now you've patched, and it doesn't work, right?

I'm guessing the game you bought with the computer was part of the preinstalled software, right? I'm also guessing it didn't come with a CD, since now you're getting that error. If that's the case, I would contact the people you bought it from and see if they can't supply the patch. This sounds simular to people who bought the game has an online downloadable game, and tried to patch. They had to contact the download provider for a patch, since they had to take measures to get around the CD check.

This is caused by the copy protection being updated with every patch. If you can't get a patch from the people you bought the computer from, you might want to try buying Complete from someone. You can buy it for about US$20.

Or just uninstall the patch and play as you were.

Before I bought Civ Complete I tried patching my Vanilla & had the same problem. I had to uninstall Civ 3 & then install the patch & reinstall Civ3.

Hello,

Thank you for yours advices.

I too had a similar problem. I bought the actual Civ3 CD out of a bargain bin and it had the initial version on it. It ran and played fine other than the bugs, lags, ect... So I patched it to 1.29f. Now I start getting this can't find CD Error!!!! Grrrrr!!! Well I have Win2k which is known for these kind of errors with video games. So I copy my disk to the hard drive and install from there. Still no good  Well it had fixed all the other games in the past. So I start searching around on Google and such. You will find the answer if you search the right things.
