Installation problems

Eh, I haven't been around for a while, not since my last hard drive died back in june.

Well, today I was trying to install civ 4 again (you can only stay away for so long). I have two copies of the game, but only have some of the discs with me. One of the copies is the bestseller edition (i think) with 2 installation disks and a third disk that is some bonus content, "the making of" or some sort.

I used that disk 1 to start installation. I then attempted to use disk 2 from the original release of Civilization 4, not figuring there should be any problem (and I'm not sure that this was the problem).

What happened was that when I inserted the second disk into my computer and attempted to run the installer again, it threw an error and civ 4 installation died. Inserting the Civ 1 disk didn't give me an uninstall prompt, so I went around systematically removing all of the civ 4 files I could find. This included the Firaxis foldier in Program files, some registry files that had been broken afterward (using CCleaner), something in My Games (which was just empty folders), and my history.

However, after removing all traces of the game from my hard drive (that I could find by searching "civilization 4" and "firaxis" in my search bar), inserting the disk still does not give me an install prompt. It simply gives me the "play" menu.

I conclude from this that there are still remnants of the game on my computer, and I want to be able to find and remove them without reformatting my hard drive. I believe the problem must be in my registry, something that CCleaner missed. Is there somebody that can help me through this arduous process? I'm sure there are still tons of you playing Fall From Heaven II online. :P

Cheers

the installshield installation information subfolders in the reinstall guide below are also used as registry keys (the cryptic ones) - those are the ones you likely missed:

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.19 (download it fresh from here).

first off, I don't have BtS or Warlords currently installed. They didn't come with that second disk (though I do have BtS).

Second, the main problem I face is that Civ 4 never appeared on the "add/remove programs list", and that forced me to go and attempt to remove it myself.

Also, I'm running vista, so I no longer have Documents and Settings. This was replaced by /Users and /ProgramData. I found some empty folders deep within /Users, and I deleted {CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8} for Civ 4, but the problem persists.

I thought you were looking through the registry keys - there are two with those cryptic file names for each of the three games - since I was not sure which ones you have I just posted all of them.

did you remove the civ4 file in installshield installation information\ ? if so after a restart it should usually allow a reinstall...

I went through regedit and deleted everything related to firaxis in there. That seemed to do the trick.

Thanks for all your help! :D
