hi to anyone who reads this, as a newbie to this forum and not very computer minded, i have installed the game with no problem whatsoever.... i double clicked the desktop icon to start the game... a window pops up saying loading.... then after that i hear the in game music but just get a view of my desktop with a civIV screen saying "done", i have tried updating my driver for my graphics card.... ati radeon 9200 128mb and still no joy. i've sat here for bloody hours trying to figure it out but i'm pulling my hair out in frustration because i wanna play this game soooooo badly. i enjoyed civ3 and want to enjoy this too. can anyone help me in my darkest hour? if not i'll just have to take it back to the store from whence it came!!!!

cheers for any ideas or help :)

Even if you already had DX9.0c on the machine it's best to install the one off the Civ disc since it adds extra files. It seems that Microsoft in their infinite wisdom didn't bother adding an update for the casual user (that would be me and you) and provided the extra files only to developers. This is just one thing you could try. Other than that if you still have issues come back with your full system specs and perhaps someone can set you on the right path. I'm pretty new here myself ;)

ok my computer spec is.....

pentium 4 - 2.66GHz
80GB HD
512MB RAM
and the ATI Radeon 9200 graphics thingy....

i did install the directx 9 from the civIV cd but sod all is happening.....
is it a lost cause????
oh by the way my system does meet all the recommended system requirements to run the game so where am i going wrong???
ohhh woe!! oh the agony!!! oh bolox!

Operating System should be included when people ask for specs as well as the service pack number ;) It's not a lost cause until everything has been tried that can be thought of...trouble is it's pretty late here and I can't seem to think at all right now :D

There are several links to threads about your issue here, hopefully one of them will be useful to you!

i appericiate its late, it is here too as i've been sat at my computer for around 8 hours trying to suss this stupid game out.... i did give myself an hour time out though :P but anyway i'm running windows xp sp2. sorry i missed it out!
oh and thanks for the link i'll have a look around see if i can find anything :)

I had the same problem. All I did was create a new account in Windows XP, and started the game from there. After I tried it (and it worked), I returned to my 'regular' account, and suddenly it worked there as well. God knows why... anyways, afterwards I deleted the newly made account, and the game kept on running smoothly. Well... not smoothly, but it kept on running...

good news is i finally got the game up and running. i played the tutorial fine without any problems. that is until i played the main game, a few minutes in it crashed to a blank black screen which lead me to reset my computer. i thought i would download the 1.09 patch to see if this would help but now i get an error message saying "cannot locate the CD ROM"

i've read many people saying insert disc 2 or 1 or whatever but my game only came with 1 dvd.... so can anyone help me?

i'm getting a bit sick and tired of this game now, if i dont get it working in the next day or 2 i'm taking the stupid thing back to the store!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for any help!!!

This exact issue has been fixed on this thread here by several people including myself in a couple of different ways. Are you on a laptop? If so, what I did is a very likely solution. Hopefully you will get to be playing in the main game soon. Good Luck!

i'm not on a laptop just my home desktop. my spec is listed above... just getting the annoying cannot locate cd rom error message popping up when i try running the game.
