Installs fine, then doesn't run...

My problem is:

I don't seem to have any problems installing. I've got the 1-disk CD, and everything seems to install okay.

My computer appears to have the necessary specs, and no error messages tell me that it's all going to go arse-shaped before and during the installation.

Then I go to load the game and... Uh.

I get the 'game loading' message, and then everything flips back to my desktop.

The music plays in the background, and my mouse cursor is the shape it would be if the game was playing. But I'm stuck on the usual desktop.

Worse, my mouse won't click on anything on the desktop, and I have to Ctr-Alt-Dlt to escape the game.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried installing the latest patch before loading it?

My cousin had the same problem. He had re-installed the game it would not start. He hadn't made any changes to his machine, either. Once we downloaded the latest patch, though, it started just fine.

Of course the latetest motherboard drivers, video card drivers, and direct x version always helps.

You may have done all that already doesent hurt to mention though.

Unfortunately I don't have internet access on my home PC.

:(

Back to the drawing board I guess!

Maybe I could download via a mate's machine, write it onto a CD, and then install it - would that work?

Yes. You can even copy patches to a USB "thumb drive" (or other flash RAM device) and run them at your "unwired" computer.
