Interaction with other nations?

I'm having a bit of trouble with the other nations. I'm the biggest nation in the game I'm currently playing. And all the other countries rush across my lands since they can't go round. This is really getting on my nerves. Whenever I cross their lands they get mad at me. But when I contact them when they have troops on my land I can't tell them to move 'em or loose 'em, so to speak.

How do I tell them to leave my space alone? (And how do I sign peace treaties and such?) >_>

Right click on the offending units. An option will come up either (don't remember the exact words) "Remove your forces now" or "Leave immediately or declare war". The more innocent sounding one brings up an answer from the opposing leader "They're leaving" which often means nothing - they keep moving. After 1 or 2 turns of this, you get the "get out or declare war" option. If it's a settler party, you usually get the "Sorry, we'll move immediately" and they're teleported off your land. If it's just units, the response is often a declaration of war from them. If you don't want war, this is a problem. If you'd like a war, this will bring on war happiness and you don't suffer a demerit from their friends.

If you're militarily weak, don't try the "Leave or declare". Build up your military so your ultimatum has some teeth. Also, put a couple of defenders in the nearest city when you give the ultimatum.

If there's a blocking point for land units (1 or 2 tile wide strip), positioning units (any kind) there keeps them from passing without attacking you. If possible, this is safer.

Hope this helps.

When you use "declare war o leave" and the enemy declare war,¿Who is the attacker?I mean, who declare the war...

They are the attacker, they declared, IIRC. That means you don't get the diplomatic demerits. I think it also gives more war happiness.

I does give not give more war happyness than what is normal. However, the AI receives a rep-hit (for whatever that is worth with respects to AI-AI diplomacy and trade ...)

If your border is to big to blockade with units you can usually use 3/4 units to guide the offending units back across the border. Catch them early and be persistant and they will usually give up. Depends on circumstances, are they trying to get to unclaimed land or another AI for war purposes.

If you can work out where they want to go you can often block them deep inside your own territory without having to cover your whole border with units. Find the narrowest point and place a line of units across it (I use captured workers if I have finished developing my tiles or else miltary units if I am between wars). Because the AI does not suffer from the fog of war they can see their path is blocked and will retreat.

In the same way galleys can help prevent opposing civs slipping a settler in back of your territory early in the game. The AI will not let their own galleys end on a sea tile so you can often place 1 or 2 of your own galleys on coastal tiles to block any incursion. Again the AI can see the blockage from well away and will turn back without approaching it.
