I'm not very clear about how intercepting planes works. If you have multiple fighters in a city, do the interception chances stack? If so, how does that work exactly? What exactly happens when an action is succesfuly intercepted? The manual isn't very clear on this stuff. . .

i know (from last night's fight with enemy SAMs) that each SAM infantry in their city has a chance to intercept one of my planes. if/when it does, it doesn't get another chance during that turn. so if i have 87 planes (haha), and he has 3 SAMs, if all 3 of his SAMs get hits then my other 84 planes have no chance to get damaged until i hit enter and it's the next turn. i think that fighters work the same way but i wasn't at war with the guys that had fighters yet.

for "stacking", i don't know and would like to hear an answer myself. i mean, if he has 5 SAMs in there, do they all 5 roll each time i send a plane (until one gets a hit), or only one rolls each time and having 5 just means that after the first is used he gets 4 other, separate tries?

it's definitely not that if there's one SAM infantry he only has a chance on flight one, and if he doesn't get a hit, then he doesn't get another chance that turn. there were cities with only one SAM that damaged me on my second or later fly-overs. but each one is out of chances after he gets a hit.

if one does intercept your action, your plane doesn't do what it was supposed to do, and is damaged or sometimes destroyed.

I don't know the answer and would like to know.

I suggest you set up a test with the worldbuilder :)

*giggle* i WB test everything i can think of how to test easily. but i can't think of an easy, quick, reliable way to test that one. i'm better at looking stuff up than i am at thinking about math in a game, that part of my brain tends to shut off.

This was recently discussed in detail in the "general" forum, here's the link: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=170750

I find air combat in general to be a bit of a hack, and none too transparent. My impression is that an airforce is only really powerful if you have one and the enemy doesn't. If they do, I will make sure to have a SAM in every stack and attackable city, use some fighters for recon but don't bother with air bombardment.

You can bombard in overwhelming numbers even if they have SAMs. I generally make huge stacks of bombers and fighters if I see that my enemy doesn't have air units. However, jet fighters will shoot down your planes very rapidly so be careful of those (fighters aren't nearly as effective at shooting down enemy planes). If you see enemy jet fighters, brace yourself for lots of losses running air missions.

if i want to hit his city with 2 stealth bombers for whatever reason tho, are my chances significantly lower if he has 6 jet fighters in his city rather than just 2 jet fighters? is it just that "one interception roll happens each combat round until all of his intercept-capable units have gotten hits" or is it "since he has 6 of them he gets 6 rolls each combat round, subtract one each time one gets a hit"?

i saw the C++ in the link but i'd never be able to figure that out.

i usually play with the recource bubbles off once my workers have hooked everything up. exceptions are when i'm looking for what to pillage, and when i'm about to send a plane to recon. i aim the plane two tiles away from any uranium or oil, since they're likely to have a SAM or mech inf right on top of it ;) i love recon missions tho, they're so fun and so cute.

I have NEVER had a recon mission intercepted. I believe they are immune. I never have them work around places like I will attack aircraft.
