Interesting problem with Civ.

I'm currently trying to run a game of Civ I from the Civilization Chronicles pack on my Vista computer. The game I'm playing is an Earth map with Lincoln, and when I get to 2003 AD, the whole game just crashes. I have no idea what the problem might be, and it happens every single time I try (I made a 2002 save file). Does anyone have any ideas how I might go about fixing this problem, or at least how I might prevent it from happing in the future? Or even what's causing this problem. Any useful feedback would be much appreciated. ;)

Happens all the time to me, especially in the latter stages of a game. Usually the game just freezes between turns and never comes back.

I would just give up on that particular game and start over.

20 years of playing CivDos and I've never had a crash. One time all my cities disappeared, but the game never crashed.

Did the infrastructure (irrigation, roads, etc) shift when this happened?

Civilization "crashed" frequently on me until I figured out the instant advice bug.

I don't remember the Windows Civ 1 crashing much, if at all. I do remember an interesting problem with my dad's game once where he was trying to attack an AI city with like 15 mech infantries in it, and it would always attack to the lower right (even when the unit was attacking from a different direction) and always lose, no matter what unit he used. Eventually, he got a diplomat and bought the city.

Ahh.

I couldn't be bothered to go and find out myself what version was on that boxset -sorry! The best advice I could give is remove Vista, re-install XP then re-install Vista when Service Pack 2 comes out. It's filled with bugs, and there is so many conflicts with 3rd Party Programmes it drives me insane. Obviously not a solution if you desire to play Halo 2 + 3.

It's not a solution at all. My computer is new and XP doesn't have the drivers for this crap.

If all else fails, you could resort to VMware or QEMU, though you'll still need a copy of Windows 3 or higher (unless you're crazy enough to run it through WINE).
